Anyone remember when the NFL Champ played the college all stars....... |
|
right before the NFL season started? That game ended in about 68 or 69, as I recall. NFL team usually won fairly easily but I think the college boys beat Lombardie's Packers once.
Also, the #2 teams in both the Western and Eastern Conferences used to play each other in ...."The Pro Bowl" in Miami. Think it was on Christmas Day or there abouts.

2. I think the second place game was actually called |
|
"The Playoff Bowl." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playoff_BowlOr, as Vince Lombardi called it: "A hinky dinky game, in a hinky dinky town, between hinky dinky teams. That's all second place is. Hinky dinky!"

3. Thanks for the link. Interesting and having grown up in Miami.... |
|
I attended a few of those games as a kid. Also, recall correctly that the Lions were in it frequently.
This was a game that Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Patrol Boys (Cross walk minders) got to go to for free in Miami.

7. I used to go to the "Coach's All-America Game" |
|
a college all star game played in Lubbock, Texas of all places. OJ Simpson was the sideline reporter. Everybody loved him. Circa 1974-1975.

8. The Dolphins were annoyed they missed the '74 game |
|
Due to the strike. For years I've heard many players express anger that the All-Star game was canceled in '74. The team was divided on the strike and players realized it was probably their last chance to win a title, since Csonka, Kiick and Warfield were lame ducks before heading to the WFL in '75. They didn't want any distractions in '74.
Actually, there was another game that preceded the College All-Star game by many weeks. Two college all star teams would play in late June every year, then a few weeks later the defending pro champion played a group of College All-Stars, many who had played in the previous game. I remember how terrific Csonka looked in both games, when he was coming out of Syracuse and had been drafted by the Dolphins. He might have been MVP in both games.
Just imagine how NFL teams would balk at that today. The rookies would play for the All-Star team then join their own squad later.
