Goodell: Destroying Spygate tapes was 'right thing to do'

ESPN.com news services

WASHINGTON -- Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.

"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.

Specter said Goodell gave him that information during the 1-hour, 40-minute meeting, which was requested by Specter so the commissioner could explain his reasons for destroying the Spygate tapes and notes.

"There were a great many questions answered by Commissioner Goodell," Specter, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters after the meeting. "I found a lot of questions unanswerable because of the tapes and notes had been destroyed."

Goodell said Belichick told him he believed the taping was legal; Goodell said he did not concur.

"He said that's always been his interpretation since he's been the head coach," the commissioner said. "We are going to agree to disagree on the facts."

2. There's no way they should have destroyed those tapes.
That never looks good.

But why are you supporting a right wing led investigation this time? ;)

3. Actually I'm not supporting the investigation troublemaker.
I'm simply posting the story from ESPN.

6. Sure sure.
:P

But if you're being honest it's at least good to see the consistency. I don't know whether to support it or not. I'd like to know just what happened but I'm not sure it rises to Senate worthy stuff with all the other REAL problems in this world. But it sure looks and smells a little fishy, doesn't it?

8. After I heard Jimmy Johnson admit he used to have his
interns go through the garbage cans in the press box booths of the opposing offensive/defensive coordinators, and fish out papers with plays written on them after the game(s) ... I decided all coaches utilize sneaky means to try to gain the advantage.

This (the New England videotaping) is not something Congress should be wasting time on.

Just like Congress should not be wasting time on Clemens or Bonds.

That's Major League Baseball's "problem."

9. I agree about congress need not bother BUT
MLB is not dealing with the "problem." If baseball had dealt with it congress would have no need to get involved. It seems congress just sits back and waits for someone to lie to them.

10. Really? who else outside of sports is lying?
:eyes:

And that's my whole point.

Considering there's a seemingly endless list of Republican liars, it's amazing Congress has time to deal with the politicians, the sports liars -- AND -- still be able to take advantage of all of their luxury bribe vacations.

4. Goodell, The Disciplinarian, Riiiiiight . . . .
The guy admits guilt (for 7 years straight), the term "illegal" was used, and a slap on the wrist for beliCHEAT and the CHEATRIOTS? What a goddamn crock of shit! Goodell says that's it? I hope there are more tapes (& I bet there are), and the CHEATriots get what they have coming.
P.S. Do you think that this "punishment" for the cheaters and cheater was handed out the same as it was to Michael Vick?
Hmmm, wonder why that is?

5. I wonder if Specter asked Goodell...
or if Goodell asked Belichick if he came up with this idea in the offseason before the 2000 season, of if this was something he had learned in a "previous job".

7. Didn't Belichick say he had been taping since he came into the league?
That means at least during his days with the Browns (and boy, did his taping program do wonders for that franchise) but would that also include his time as a coordinator with the Giants?

11. I was wondering about that as well...

The only thing is that this taping technique has become obsolete for D-coordinators since the QB helmet came into use in 1994, so as a D-Coordinator, he'd have nothing to point his camera at. This is still useful to Offensive Coordinators, though, since it allows them to record the defensive signals being sent in, which are still done from the sidelines (in most cases). As a coordinator with the Giants, he may have done this since it was before 1994, but as a coordinator for the Jets (after the introduction of the helmet comm) it wouldn't have been any help to him. However, he may have been aware of the offensive coordinator doing it.

Interestingly, I found this article about use of a helmet comm being used in 1956, so it's been around a while.

12. And BeliCHEAT Says Now That The Tapes Didn't Make Much Of A Difference?
That must be why he ADMITTEDLY kept doing it.
What an asshole liar.
