LMAO! If you knew him you'd laugh too. He was still pissed about it this morning, lol. -WB

Kid Wetzel takes Daredevils’ reins

The kid did all right.

“Coach Justin is young, but not when it comes to x’s and o’s,” said Martane Freeman of Butte’s brand-new, 27 year-old head coach, Justin Wetzel. Wetzel marshaled his troops with fluid substituting and timely game stoppages in his CBA debut at the Butte Civic Center on Friday night.

Wetzel, who just came on board the ‘Devils bus three days ago, was impressed with his team in spite of the 115-101 loss to the Great Falls Explorers.

“We didn’t play with any lack of effort. In fact, (Carl) Boyd said he hadn’t seen the team play with this much effort in a long time,” said Wetzel.

Wetzel, who took over for player-coach Odell Bradley, noted some areas he thought needed fine tuning, though.

“We need to do a better job off the dribble penetration. And we’re a little stagnant yet,” said Wetzel. The ‘Devils new coach, more than once, was heard from the sideline yelling to his troops to stop standing around.

2. I don't know, he said he got hit because of his age
and it was bullshit. But he gets on the refs from time to time. He was always getting T'd up when he was a high school coach, haha.

4. yeah it runs in the family
My uncle was a head coach at some high schools and he used to get technicals all the time. Hell, when I was a wrestling coach, I nearly got booted out a few times, haha. That's kind of rare for a wrestling coach, I'm sort of like Happy Gilmore when he said he held the ice hockey records for most penalty minutes and also for trying to cut a guy's throat with his own skate, lol.

5. I grew up on Montana basketball, high school
Conrad Cowboys vs Browning Indians, Cut Bank Wolves, Shelby Coyotes, etc.

This story about your brother takes me back.

Thanks.

6. oh yeah same here
My uncle Don played for CB in the years CB and Conrad had some serious wars. They one year CB won a state title and the next Conrad did, with virtually the same teams both years. I remember about 10 years ago they had a reunion game between those two teams in CB.

My first cousin played for Browning in the famous triple-overtime state championship game against Malta. I was a waterboy for Browning that year. I sat the bench and watched that whole game when I was ten.

I remember Conrad had room for about 800 spectators.

I was blown away when we went to Cut Bank.

3000.

High school.

We'll meet up soon.

13. I had the distinction of winning one of my division titles in Cut Bank
at our gym and then the next year winning my other one in Conrad. :) I wasn't as popular in the latter gym. :) I have some great friends from Conrad though.

12. My theory is that anyone can do better than a man named Odell.
;)

Seriously, congrats to him. Must be the thrill of a lifetime.

14. Yeah he's doing what he loves
And it's good experience for future jobs. I always tell him that George Karl got his start coaching a Montana team in the CBA, so it's a good starting point.

15. I already like his spirit.
And like you say, this is a starting point, not an ending. I hope it works for him. Just reaching the point he has is cool.

I wanted to coach hockey, and think I'd be good at it, but I have no urge to deal with parents who think their kid is the next Bobby Orr. :)
