NEW YORK (AP)—Alex Rodriguez makes more this year than his hometown Florida Marlins.

Boosted by his new deal with the New York Yankees, A-Rod tops the major league baseball salary list at $28 million, according to a study of contract terms by The Associated Press. The 33 players on the Marlins’ opening-day roster and disabled list total $21.8 million.

“The Marlins? It’s amazing,” Rodriguez said. “And they still seem to find a way to be very competitive. They have a great pool of talent; they made some unbelievable trades, so they have great personnel people. To win two championships in 11 years, that’s really admirable, and I’m very proud of that organization, being from Miami.”

For the first time in baseball history, the average salary topped the $3 million mark. The 855 players on opening-day rosters and the DL averaged $3.15 million, up 7.1 percent from last year’s starting average of $2.94 million.

6. I believe
A-ROD's salary is much worse. 660K plus per diem for playing a game eight months out of the season? I just don't understand how an A-ROD can sit across the table in negotiations and accept such monies. Surely to God he could live on half as much.

7. sure he could
but if a billionaire is willing to pay him that much, why not? as long as Yankees fans continue to buy tickets, jerseys and the YES network to watch games, the price will keep going up.

it's not like any pay cut he took would go to feed starving children, it would go right back into the pockets of the Steinbrenner family, who obviously think he is worth that much in pinstripes.

19. Oh please
if someone offered me that much money to play a freaking game, I would jump on it. I wouldn't say "oh no thank you. That is too much money"

The blame should be on the stupid owners that pay stupid amounts of money for playing a game.

I don't even like A-fraud, but to blame him solely is silly.

8. what's sad is that the most profitable team in baseball
er, that's the Marlins, not the Yankees, one that is dependent on revenue sharing, doesn't even spend the entire revenue sharing amount on salaries. Other, higher revenue, clubs are giving them money so that they can afford to be competitive and the owner just pockets it. that is disgusting.

10. There's something really wrong with this
People can't afford healthcare and medications but these guys get more money than many small countries for playing a child's game. Sad.

(And I love baseball.)

13. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with it. Baseball is as pure a meritocracy as you'll find.
Big stars = lots of fans in the stands, buying soda pop, jerseys, caps, plus the stars attract advertisers with big $$$. So why shouldn't they benefit? Is it better that the owners KEEP all of that money?

Or at least eliminate all of these teams that can't compete financially with the others. Most of the time their record is atrocious.

22. I Believe the MLB SHould Have a CAP Just Like Football
Something to even the playing field for all teams to compete. I'm fortunate living in an area where my team (Red Sox) can get plenty of revenue from all of New England. I think it would do baseball itself good and would bring more people to the games in areas of the country that have a hard time filling in seats.

23. And as of Monday May 12th, 2008...
...the Florida Marlins have the best record in baseball:

Uggla fuels Marlins' sweep

http://www.miamiherald.com/589/story/529547.html

Dan Uggla cranked out two more home runs Sunday, giving him seven in his past nine games, and Florida ascended to the best record in baseball.

<snip>

"Dan Uggla didn't like the feel of the pink bat he used in his first plate appearance Sunday afternoon, going back to his regular model for the remainder of the game.

However, Jeremy Hermida liked his bat so much he is going to try to use it again Monday.

Regardless of the color, Uggla and Hermida used their bats well, both hitting home runs in the eighth inning -- for Uggla, it was his second of the game -- to lift the Marlins to a 5-4 victory over Washington at Nationals Park and giving Florida the best record in the major leagues.

The Marlins (23-14) gained big-league supremacy -- although it is only May -- when the Diamondbacks (23-15) lost to the Cubs (22-15) and the Red Sox (24-16) were beaten by the Twins."

24. Go Marlins
Couldn't happen to a better team. I love the team because they are all so young and just don't know that they aren't supposed to be winning.
By the way, ESPN still doesn't give the Marlins any love. I wonder why . . . It's all about the Yankees and Red Sox and Tigers.

While the Marlins have the best record in baseball it seems the Yankees are struggling. In addition, A-Rod had to miss a few games.
