How can you not get emotional watching this guy throw out
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 11:27 PM by cboy4
the ceremonial first pitch?

Good for Bill Buckner. I still feel sick whenever I watch that highlight from the '86 World Series. Just nauseous.

It would be everyone's worst nightmare . . and to be welcomed back to Boston the way he was today is nothing short of chilling.

BOSTON (AP) — Bill Buckner's eyes were red. He paused for 15 seconds to control his emotions. Then he spoke again.

The outstanding hitter known for a costly World Series error had just thrown out the ceremonial first pitch to a loud standing ovation before the Red Sox home opener Tuesday. It was a strike to former teammate Dwight Evans.

The experience, Buckner said, was "probably about as emotional as it could get."

But he nearly decided not to come.

On October 25, 1986, the Boston Red Sox faced the New York Mets in game 6 of the World Series. Boston led the best-of-7 series 3 games to 2, and had a two-run lead with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning. New York came back to tie the game with three straight singles off Calvin Schiraldi and a wild pitch by pitcher Bob Stanley. Mookie Wilson fouled off several pitches before hitting a ground ball to Buckner at first base. The ball rolled under Buckner's glove, through his legs, and into right field, allowing Ray Knight to score the winning run, forcing a seventh game, which the Mets won. Buckner's error capped off a poor Game 6 performance; he went 0-for-5 with runners on in all five at-bats.

1. The whole ceremony was emotional
I'm glad Buckner came back.

2. It sucked how he got treated.
He was one of the main reasons the Sox even made it that far. Watching him run on his bad ankles was painful to see, but he kept playing, and playing damn well.

This was a cool thing.

5. Yes, it sucked. However, Buckner blamed the media....
not the fans for his treatment. I'm sure media said bad things about him but fans were just awful, too.

6. I remember how bad some fans were.
It pissed me off.

Hopefully the guy can move on and feel good about his career. He has nothing to feel bad about in my book.

3. When the Bosox won the '04 World Series
I thought, "Go home, Bill Buckner--all is forgiven!" And I was a Mets fan!

4. I'm glad to see him come back...
Sure, Buckner actually came back to play a few more games for the Sox at the end of his career, but the wound was still raw, and he didn't deserve the way he was treated then. I'm glad to see the response he got yesterday. Unfortunately, I couldn't make the game this year. I missed my first home opener since '99.
