Gerbe leads Boston College past Notre Dame for Eagles' third hockey title.
DENVER - Nathan Gerbe no longer has to be a gracious runner-up.

Twenty-four hours after missing out on the Hobey Baker award, the nation's leading scorer led Boston College to the NCAA hockey championship that had eluded the talent-laden Eagles the last two seasons.

Gerbe scored twice and added two assists in Boston College's 4-1 win over Notre Dame at the sold-out Pepsi Center on Saturday night as the Eagles finally hoisted the trophy after losing in the title game to Wisconsin in 2006 and Michigan State last year.

Gerbe had a hat trick in the semifinals against North Dakota and finished his command performance at the Frozen Four with five goals and three assists.

The five-foot-five fireplug from Oxford, Mich., who led the nation in scoring with 35 goals and 32 assists, shrugged it off Friday night when he lost out to Michigan's Kevin Porter for hockey's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.

"Since Day 1, we've been fixated on one trophy and that's the national championship," Gerbe insisted.

This guy is Sabres property, and if/when he makes the team I think they'll really like him.

3. ND got a bit screwed in this game.
They were down 3-1 and a guy took a shot. Another ND player made a kicking motion to kick the puck, but he missed and the puck still went in. He never touched it with his skate, but they took the goal away. It should have counted. A few minutes later BC scored to make it 4-1, essentially sealing the game.

4. Damn anti-Catholic bias!
Wish the Pope had been around for this...he likes Brothers of the Holy Cross better than Jesuits! }(

5. Now, those are fightin' words!
I grew up loathing anything that even hinted at "Holy Cross".

"Oh Holy Cross oh Holy Cross. All you eat is applesauce." I think I learned that in the cradle.

Even though it didn't refer to ND. ;)

7. About time
After making it to the championship game 3 years running, its about time they won one. Loved seeing my Spartans knock those guys down a few pegs after they were so confident it would be a blowout.
