ESPN likens cheering for Celtics to supporting Hitler, wanting nuclear holocaust, hating USA etc
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hill/080614

In a column which has since been heavily edited, ESPN writer Jemele Hill published an anti-Celtics screed that included the lines:

Rooting for the Celtics is like saying Hitler was a victim. It's like hoping Gorbachev would get to the blinking red button before Reagan.

Rooting for the Celtics is like supporting inflation, unemployment and locusts. It's like praying for Eva Mendes to get married and for Brad Pitt to be disfigured.

It's like wishing dollar bills and free time for Pacman Jones. It's like hoping the pit bull doesn't take Michael Vick's pinky as a memento.

If you're from Detroit, and you're at peace with the idea of the Celtics winning another NBA title, immediately hurl yourself off the Ambassador Bridge.

This is a real bang-up job, even after being edited (after it had already been published). She's hit all the bases. Is there any group she didn't offend with this trash?

1. Here's the Deadspin link
http://deadspin.com/5016575/celtics-fans-are-no-longer-hitler-sympathizers

Oh, don't bother Command+F looking for it in her article, the editors have, you could say, taken it out of commission like Archduke Ferdinand. Even the Google cache of Hill's article has already been Norby'd, so there's no chance of seeing where in the story it was mentioned, or what other dark moments in history are like cheering for the Celtics.

Impressive that ESPN was able to clean the Google cache.

However, Yahoo still has the original.

2. (shrug) She's a Detroit person, and Boston has a very ugly sports history...
Hyperbole, yes. Big deal, no.

4. She's just a typical sour-grapes-spewing Pistons fan...
..who sincerely believes that the Pistons have never been outplayed by a superior team.

5. Ms. Hill, I beseech you
IF your team loses, please take a look outside. The sky is still blue and the grass is still green.

Now, please, mellow out and get a life.

6. That's just stupid. I'm rooting for a worldwide plague, not a nuclear holocaust.

7. Well she doesn't speak for most Pistons' fans, including this one
Most Detroit fans I know would vastly prefer Boston to win over the Lakers. I know that the rivalry with the Celtics in the 80's was tough, but if nothing else (except in a few instances) you root for your conference, not the other one!

The exception for Detroit basketball fans, IMO, is the Bulls. They can go screw themselves. I enjoy rooting against them and always will.

But I can state affirmatively that in THIS case, the Pistons' fans I know, including my entire family, are behind Boston now.

9. The view from Seattle:
the Lakers suck more than the Seltics, but OKLAHOMA CITY SUCKS THE MOST.

10. I agree. When they said there were possible tornadoes in OKC last night
I found myself wish that a tornado would hit their (empty at the time) basketball arena and nothing else in the whole area. I know it wasn't nice, and I certainly didn't want anyone to get hurt. But say the tornado just tore off the roof, and did a little extra structural damage?
