Boston
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_Boston

Boston was the site of the first game of the first baseball World Series, in 1903. The series was played between the Red Sox (then known as the "Pilgrims") and the Pittsburgh Pirates,<1> while the team still played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds (the site is now a part of Northeastern University). The Sox won that series and six more since then (1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, and 2007). Recently the 2004 team is said to have broken the 86-year long "Curse of the Bambino." There have been many legendary players on the team; members of the Baseball Hall of Fame include Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Wade Boggs, manager Joe Cronin and owner Tom Yawkey.

The Boston Celtics basketball team, who play at the TD Banknorth Garden, were a founding member of the Basketball Association of America, one of the two leagues that merged to form the National Basketball Association. The Celtics have the distinction of having more World Championships than any other NBA team with 16 championships from 1957 to 1986.<2>

The list of Celtics who are members of the Basketball Hall of Fame include Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Dave Cowens, Larry Bird, original owner Walter Brown (also president of the Bruins and owner of the Boston Garden), and longtime coach and team president Red Auerbach, who worked for the team until his death in 2006 at age 89. Longtime announcer Johnny Most was also honored by the Basketball Hall of Fame as a recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award. Now the Celtics are back and better than ever with a new big three. Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce make up one of the best defensive and offensive lineups in NBA history. With help of Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, coach Doc Rivers they once again made history by winning the 2008 NBA Finals and their 17th championship against long time rival Los Angeles Lakers.

Although the team has been in Foxborough since 1971, a site closer to the state of Rhode Island, the New England Patriots are still generally considered to be Boston's football team. The team was founded in 1960 as the Boston Patriots, charter members of the American Football League. In 1970, the team joined the National Football League and moved to Foxboro Stadium in 1971.

While in Boston, the team played at Nickerson Field (at the time still known and configured as Braves Field), Fenway Park, Harvard Stadium, and BC's Alumni Stadium (technically, just outside of the city limits). The team has won three Super Bowl titles (2001, 2003, 2004) since the 2001 season,<4> and currently is considered to be second in popularity only to the Red Sox.

===

2001-2002: Patriots

2003-2004: Patriots

2004: Red Sox

2004-2005: Patriots

2007: Red Sox

2008: Celtics.

Six championship parades through Boston in the last six years.

Bat. Shit. Crazy.

2. So when is their press conference ?
Will they say nice things about the Lakers:evilgrin: and offer to pay their travel expenses?or will they have to wait for the Lakers to think about it a while and salve their hurt feelings..Maybe they will do it in stages..with the final acceptance of not quite winning..on Saturday

No sting left in that needle.

5. Los Angeles
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 01:06 AM by David Zephyr
I like your Patriots and the Red Sox, but not the Celtics. And I like your city so much that I've been there every single year since 1982. Every year.

But cut us some slack. Don't get so greedy.

Geez. We don't even have a football team here in Los Angeles and you folks there in Boston just seem to have it all.

Boston massacre. Grrr.

8. Don't blame me
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 01:29 AM by WilliamPitt
I fully expected to live my whole life and die without seeing championship titles won by either the Sox or Pats. I've given up on the Bruins (until they get new ownership), and I was at Game 7 of the '84 Celtics/Lakers title game, so I figured wanting more from the C's was just greedy.

The new century has been very kind.

And they can stop now, as far as I'm concerned. I don't have to see another title for 3,000 years.

But there is a parade on Thursday. Again. Gotta see that.

Defense. The Lakers will hopefully take this and build on it. The West is a run-and-gun conference, but if one team decides to shoot *and* play solid D, that team will dominate the whole show. Jackson saw the game, too. I see plans afoot for next year.

6. This as the reason I watched the finals
I can say "I was there", even if my "there" was a podunk little bar up in the North Shore. I don't know shit about BBall, and had to have the significance of that white-bearded person explained to me, but it was a lot of fun. But I smoked part of the Victory Cigar, and now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to :smoke:

Rock over London, rock over Boston. Celtics, the winners!

18. Nor the Steamrollers and Blazers
I used to go see the Blazers most home games when I was in high school. I didn't like lacrosse but it was something to do. It also only cost $10 a ticket, and in the Old Garden, you can move down as close as you wanted, and we always sat right behind the goal so we'd be on tv whenever a goal was scored there. :D

12. Now why was this bumped?
Doesn't everybody know spectator sports is a trivial leisure interest for a subforum, except insofar as it involves New York and/or Boston, in which case it's Always History?

13. The only champions I grew up to "know" were the Celts and the Bs
But, to be honest, hockey was not a big deal in Maine so it was really only the Celtics that we paid attention to.

I have always been a huge Red Sox fan and until '04 I never expected to see a Championship.

This is all pretty sweet but I can see where it'd piss off people in other cities. Sorry, folks. We're honestly not gloating; just reveling in the current high in New England sports.

19. Jr High class trip.
They went whale-watching, to the Freedom Trail, etc. She had a blast. We are lucky to have our daughters attending a rural public school, with a high-quality of both teachers and administrators. They did "fund-raising" so that all the kids could go, because there are a lot of parents who are having trouble making ends meet these days.

My daughter is reaping the benefits of progressive teachers. She started the regents classes for 9th (and one 10th) grade classes this year. Her "toughest" class was math, which she doesn't care for (her younger sister is uncanny at math). There were 26 tests & quizes; out of a possible 2600 points, she got 2598. Of course, she is grounded for the summer for that -2. (She did better in her other classes.)

She'll "finish" high school in 10th grade, then the school will provide her with 2 years of NYS university courses, including a work program with a state agency. Thus, when people talk about "public education," I know that even in a rural area with economic hardships, it can work wonders. The trip to Boston was the icing on the cake.

NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Champions in 2001 and 2008.

That gives Boston a championship in all four major sports... :P
