3. Big fan of the "always come up short" Boston College Eagles
Like the Razorbacks too.

Hate might be too strong a word, but I'm always glad to see the 'Canes and Trojans lose.

we're not talking about KKK hate or anything.

It's sports hate -- all in fun. :)

7. I HATE the Yankees...
I just don't feel that way about any college football teams, though. Since BC's undoings have been mostly at their own hands, we don't really have a good rival that I can hate in the same way.

Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 03:40 PM by hughee99
but after moving to a new conference (ACC), playing many new teams, and not having any local rivalries (the closest other team is Maryland), I just haven't developed a hatred for anyone yet. I'm hopeful, though. :)

4. First favorite: MEEEEEEEECHIGAN!!!!!
Least favorite?

Other than the obvious (Ohio State), I dislike Nebraska, Florida, Miami of Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan State (depending on the coach at the time), Washington, and UCLA.

Notre Dame has traditionally been my second favorite team. They've made it harder to like them lately since their fans began hating on Michigan more. But in general, I've alwasy liked them.

With OSU and MSU, it really varies with the program. I can't bear Tressell (it has nothing to do with win-loss record), and MSU has had some doozie coaches over the years too (Saban, for example).

14. Love Canes, despise Gators
USC is my alma mater and #2 favorite.

Admittedly, I was as much of a fan of the Orange Bowl as its occupants. My rooting interest in the Dolphins declined when they bolted the Orange Bowl and I'm not sure I'll still be as passionate for the Canes now that they are playing in Joe Robbie's bland mistake.

I hate that stadium almost as much as the Gators.

19. Do you remember this?

President Richard Nixon awards the plaque symbolic of the National Championship to Coach Darrell Royal. UT 15 Arkansas 14. I didn't make the trip, but I was a student at UT at the time. 1969 was one wild year with student riots and the National Championship.

I ought to read this book.

28. Sure Do!
I was a Sophomore at Fayetteville High which was just a block away from the University. It was a yucky, rainy day and the sky was full of helicopters and Bill Clinton was up a tree near the stadium (and he was also in England at the same time.) Hogs up 14 to zip going into the fourth. Nixon pissed Penn State off by declaring UT the Champs but Penn State refused an invite to play Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

I put that book on my Christmas List. I bet my wife will find it.

My wife is from Kansas and a big ole Jayhawk fan so I have to keep up with the Big 12 every year. Our garage is plastered with Hog and Hawk Paraphernalia.

38. Happy Feller
I remember that game. I was in elementary school and rooting for Arkansas. I could come up with more specifics like Montgomery to Dicus and James Street, but primarily I think of Happy Feller and the winning extra point after the huge 4th down play and subsequent TD.

36. As a Houston Cougar, I fondly remember the SWC.
In my opinion, one of the best conferences. I especially liked it when Houston was playing well, like when I was there in the early 1980's. It was cool paying Texas and A&M in the Astrodome. I dated a Razorback for a little while. Fun times!

44. An awesome conference indeed
I graduated in 79 and was in Fayetteville in the early 80's during the Lou Holtz era. I saw the Hogs play Houston a few times. I was married to a Jayhawk so I didn't date any Razorbacks.

37. Little known fact about that play
You are correct, sid, it wasn't a fumble. It wasn't even ruled a fumble on the field. Much worse than that. It was one of the incomparable officiating screw ups in football history, one that perhaps altered a national championship.

That play wasn't 4th and goal. There was plenty of room for a 1st down. In fact, I think it was 4th and 7 at the 11 so Miami merely needed to bust the 4 yard line.

Incredibly, during the hysteria after Gary lost the ball and Stonebreaker "recovered," the officiating crew got confused and thought it was 4th and goal. They awarded the ball to Notre Dame on downs, not via turnover. That's why they moved the ball to where Gary went down, not where Stonebreaker ended up with the ball.

I have the tape. Jimmy Johnson is on the sideline furiously signaling 1st down. You can read his lips, "It's a first down." Johnson erred bigtime by sending his defense on the field during the confusion. He should have held his team on the sideline until the bonehead refs figured it out.

That play is routinely described improperly in college football history books. Even Lou Holtz' biography says it was a fumble. The officiating crew initially admitted their mistake. In fact, there was an article in the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel with specific quotes from the head of officials and one of the game officials, apologizing to Miami and detailing the screw up. I've seen the link many times on Canes sites but unfortunately I don't have it now.

The officials quickly clammed up and refused to comment, after the outrage from Miami when the true story surfaced.

I missed most of the game that day because I was working overtime wiring a mall in Port Charlotte. I came home just before that play happened. I remember screaming at the television and my girlfriend screaming at me for some shit she said I'd done. I think I might have sat a beer down on that cheesy black coffee table she loved without using one of her coasters. What a fucked up day that was.

And another thing: that wasn't pass interference against Ohio St. either.

*on edit* You wouldn't know of any good video featuring Alonzo Highsmith would you?
