Big Brown Faces 10 in Monmouth Stakes
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 09:26 PM by two gun sid
Being a dual-classic winner sure has its share of privileges. One of them is being able to have a new stakes written for you, one with a very large purse and on the exact day of your choosing.

IEAH Stables asked and they shall receive. On Sept. 13, Big Brown will return to the turf and test older horses for the first time, as he faces 10 rivals in the $500,000 Monmouth Stakes. The 1 1/8-mile event, which would be reduced to $200,000 if Big Brown does not go to the post, will be televised live on TVG, with coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m. EDT.

Big Brown, a winner of six of seven career starts, including the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I), has not raced on turf since breaking his maiden a little over a year ago at Saratoga. It was that sparkling 11 1/4-length score that prompted IEAH managing partner Mike Iavarone to buy a majority interest in the son of Boundary. Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said Big Brown’s return to turf will not only help his troubled feet, but will be an ideal prep for the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) next month on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface.

“He’s had feet issues to deal with. It’s not like he’s a horse that wakes up ready to roll,” Dutrow said earlier this week. “He’s had five or six quarter cracks since I’ve had him. He has tender feet, and we want to keep him on grass as much as possible. It’s so much easier to keep him on his natural surface. We wanted to race 40 days before the Breeders’ Cup.”

Okay, I gotta give BB his props. He's taking on older horses. He's taking on older Graded Stakes winners. That's what great horses are supposed to do. I don't care that this was a race written just for him. That's just bullshit. Good job IEAH, Dutrow and BB.

I say he gets beat. Maybe by Shakis or Silver Tree. I hope he proves me wrong.

And to you people that think I'm a nice guy and my post the other day was out of character I say: Fuck, you don't know me very well. I'm in the horse business so that should tell you something. This ain't my first fuckin' rodeo.

1. LMAO!
I should have said, you post fairly politely among the fuckwads of the sports forum..seriously, you do come off as pretty rational/objectivecomared to some of the loud mouthed homers here...So when you do curse..Its much more effective and interesting....
You deal in horseshit every day..Thats gotta have SOME effect on your personality though...
(somebody needs to make a smilie shoveling horseshit..it would be PERFECT for this group).

Looking forward to "seeing" (I will have to see a replay) what BB does

PS--I still think you are a nice guy though...:hi:

and the people in the Sports Forum are the best on DU in my opinion. We, as a group, are the most lovable fuckwads in cyberspace.

Thanks for thinking I'm a nice person. I'll do my best to live up to your opinion.

We'll see how good the big brown moo cow is today. I'd like to see him win 'cause he's a good horse with potential to be great. Like Buckpasser. Both had bad wheels and Buckpasser overcame those problems and wound up as one of the immortals. Great horses overcome problems.

I hope everything is well with you and your family, turtlensue. I saw a post about your mom the other day and my thoughts are with you.

5. I'm 5 and 1 with BB this last year and see no reason not to hang with him.
He's 1/2 with about 15 minutes to PT.... If he hits even money I might go chalk and pick up some quick even money. Shakis IRE-- and Proudinsky---GER are the only real threats but I doubt they will get BB in the homestretch.

About a 30 dollar pick up. I'm sitting at a video game place with my kid and while he plays video games, I have my laptop and am logged into youbet.

16. Yep, another gutsy impressive race
Gad, Big Brown's head was bouncing all over the place just after they straightened out for home. He was wobbling left and right and I thought he'd never straighten out. Once he did, he regained enough momentum and held them off to secure the barbeque. :)

I have no idea why it's fashionable to knock Big Brown. I didn't want an unbeaten Triple Crown winner with only 6 races, but otherwise there's nothing to pick apart.

18. It's scoreboard and in the winners world, that's all you care about...
I remember when Tiger Woods was coming up he had a bunch of naysayers saying he was going to be a one year wonder... well--- the dude kept winning and eventually gained the respect he deserved.

I don't know if BB would beat Curlin---- but man--- I'd love to see that race and I think it will happen---and I think it will be great for the sport.

17. I went down to OTB to watch -
Sitting there all by myself at the end of a bench right in front of the screen I laughed out loud when he held on for the win - I was that pleased. They showed the gallop out, too, and I thought he looked pretty frisky still - at least nothing like the quick shot I saw of him after the Haskell, when he looked totally done in.

19. Big Brown did very well yesterday.
I'm pretty impressed that he fought back in the stretch and gutted it out. I watched the gallop out also and he looked good. I was watching for any signs that his feet were bothering him. I didn't see anything. I think he's good to go for the BC Classic. His fans should be happy.

I never thought IEAH would keep going with him. I thought they would use his feet as an excuse to send him to stud. I thought wrong. They have done a fine job and not made excuses. I can't and won't ask for more from a group of owners. Hell, they're classier than a lot of the older big-name outfits.

Your horse is a very good one. Enjoy his remaining race/s.

20. glad to hear you affirm my impression of the gallop out
I never trust my own eye, not being knowlegable enough about horses. Anything I even "think" I know I picked up on boards and in books - no sub for experience.

Yes, I like BB, and Curlin. I like Silver Tree too - I "picked" him years ago in a race for his name - though was disappointed he was not a grey, lol. I thought Proudinsky looked pretty grand in the post parade and ran a nice race, too.

21. That was impressive!
Much more so than the Haskell. I may have been wrong about 'ol BB - he just may give Curlin a good run for the money ... if they meet. Let's hope it happens.

I checked your MS page this morning and saw that you hadn't logged on in a while. I was getting a little concerned.

Dude, Mother Nature has been kicking your ass this past year. Is there anything I can do for you?

23. We're all good, man - thanks :)
Few downed lines and trees, and electricity was out overnight. Some impressive wind gusts and rain squalls. Ike was on the borderline of TS/Tropical Depression when it moseyed on through here. Much, much worse down in SE Texas. My friend made a rescue trip Friday night to get his daughter out of that mess in Houston. He thought about sticking around at a safe spot but took one look at what was on the way and hightailed it back north. :)

My Internet(s) was kaput through the week - completely unrelated to the storm.

Sure missed my horse racing news, I must say!

24. Horse for the Arc: Zarkava
This 3-year-old filly just won the Prix Vermeille over the weekend. Here's the video replay of her Longchamp win: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsgdXISrmRM. Yes, that's her trailing the field as they turn for home. An electrifying win and she's a favorite, if not the the fave, for the Arc in two-and-a-half weeks. I don't know what the Aga Khan has planned for her but I'd love to see her in the States for the BC. A beautiful, powerful filly.

26. Soldier of Fortune
Maybe Duke of Marmalade and Septimus. Not sure who else is up for consideration from his stable. I like Duke of Marmalade a lot.

And I love great fillies like Zarkava. She makes the sport exciting - loved watching her quicken up there down the straight!
