1. Wasn't that Miami vs Boston College, Doug Flutie?
That's the Hail Mary i know, since good triumphed over evil with that pass!

2. I miss Metroplitan Stadium
Those were awesome outdoor conditions.

I remember that play and it sickened me. I always rooted against the Cowboys in the '70s, other than the two Super Bowls vs. Pittsburgh. That was truly evil vs. evil.

5. Yes, young ones and Cowboy haters. This was the Hail Mary game
More miraculous than the "Catch" but not quite the "Immaculate Reception." Staubach claimed that he threw the ball, and proclaimed "Hail Mary." That was also the first wild card team to go to a Superbowl. But, of course, the Cowboy haters in the MSM will never talk about that.

You have been educated.

7. Absolutely agree about Staubach's politics
He is my all time sport's hero, but he can be a Repuke of the worst kind. You have to keep those things separate. Our Red Sox fans here have had to struggle with this with Mr. Bloody Sock being such a Repuke, and very outspoken one at that.

10. Very true..if I were a Cowboys fan, I'd probably be more tolerant of
Roger...that said, it is best (as you said) to keep politics and sports separate, and best not to know your sports heroes political beliefs, because the odds are you will be disappointed. Fortunately, most sports figures keep their beliefs to themselves, but you do have the occasional Curt or Roger.

9. Probably did
But he sure concealed it well.

On a serious note, Fran Tarkinton's dad died on that day of a heart attack.

12. When I watched that the other night, Pearson did not push off.
He more or less weaved between the two defenders and caught the pass.

11. The birth of "Captain Comeback"
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 09:09 PM by Va Lefty
Staubach and Landry were both hard core pukes/fundies. But I still love the sinner hate the sin.
Funny story, my uncle went to college with Charlie Waters at Clemson and became good friends. Waters told him that Landry led them in prayer before a game in DC against (you know who). Coach Landry closed the prayer with "Lord, give us the strength to kick their sorry ass."
