TODAY - at San Jacinto, California (Versus) - 10 rounds, light middleweights: Paul Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) vs. Andy Kolle (17-1, 12 KOs); 10 rounds, heavyweights: Chris Arreola (24-0, 21 KOs) vs. Israel Carlos Garcia (19-1, 11 KOs).
SATURDAY - at Los Angeles (HBO) - 12 rounds, light middleweights: Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) vs. Ricardo Mayorga (29-6-1, 23 KOs); 12 rounds, WBC welterweight title: Andre Berto (22-0, 19 KOs) vs. Steve Forbes (33-6, 9 KOs).
There are two good fight cards scheduled for boxing fans to watch on tv. The first one is on Versus tonight. On the undercard, hard-hitting young heavyweight Chris Arreola takes on Israel Garcia. Arreola is an entertaining, tough fighter, but he can't afford to be looking past this fight.
In the main event, Paul Williams fights Andy Kolle; again, the fight should showcase Williams' considerable skills, but is not one he can take for granted.
The HBO card on Saturday will be entertaining. It had been considered for a PPV card, but luckily the promoters came to their senses. In many ways, the undercard match could be the best of the week. Undefeated Andre Berto fights Steve Forbes in what might prove to be Berto's toughest test to date. I've been watching Berto closely since watching him in Saratoga a little more than a year ago. He is fast, hits hard, and is actually one of the nicest guys in the sport -- outside of the ring. But he makes mistakes, and Forbes will be looking to move from side-to-side and try to exploit any mistake the young warrior makes. It could be over in less than a minute, or it could go the distance: either way, it'll be worth watching.
Shane Mosley should outbox Ricardo Mayorga for four or five rounds, then TKO him around the 6th. But, anything can happen in that ring. Mayorga might surprise people by coming into the ring in top shape, and concentrate on winning by wearing Mosley down.
Enjoy the fights, and we should have an interesting October in the sport of boxing.
