I'll tell you what I can cope with - NO FRIGGIN FOOTBALL FOR MONTHS
If i am not mistaken it was Earnest Hemingway that said; There are only 3 sports. Bullfighting, Mountain Climbing and Motor Racing. Everything else is a game. Stick and ball sports. The perfect mindless distraction for a mindless nation. And when i say Motor Racing I am NOT talking about NASCAR. NASCAR is the professional wrestling of motorsport. Apologies to the rabid fans of football

8. Well then define sport.....
Also, can a game also be a sport?

These are wholly separate questions from whether football is taken way too seriously in this country.

9. I'm glad it's over, too.
But don't be promoting motor racing as a sport, NASCAR, F1, Sprint Cars, Crazy Eights. Whatever it is, it ain't a sport. It's great, and it's wonderful, but it ain't a sport.

12. LOL!
A made up definition doesn't make it a sport. Call it an activity. Call it a dangerous activity if you want. But you jus' doesn't ever, ever call it a sport. If you went and did that, then we'd have to call football a sport, and we doesn't want to be doing that.

21. Maybe it is a sport for the car. Surely not for the driver.
"Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively."

Auto racing is not a sport in any way shape or form. And anyone who mentions how uncomfortable the drivers have it merely reinforces my argument. Unless you want to classify all uncomfortable jobs as sports.

It may be a very enjoyable activity no doubt but sport? Pshaw.

As for Bullfighting I'd say that it fails as a sport because it is not competitive. Ever see the bull win? Didn't think so.

No doubt mountain climbing can be a sport.

Football is THE sport. No sport is as complicated or requires as much teamwork. =)

17. boring
formula one can't be half as difficult as driving during rush hour on the Washington Beltway. Which isn't a sport either.

19. Spoken like a true Colonial
Ive lived outside DC also and have probably driven on more beltways than most on DU. Driving 25 MPH on the freeway doesn't compare to Gran Prix racing and you KNOW it. You obviously have no idea what it takes to drive a Formula One car competitively. It is FUCKING difficult and there are damned few people that have ever been good at it. It is comparable to being a Blue Angels or Thunderbird pilot. Michael Schumacher's salary puts him in the top 3 highest paid athletes in the world and he is as well known around the world as virtually any sports figure in history, with the possible exception of Ayrton Senna who was, SURPRISE!!!!!! ANOTHER F1 DRIVER!!!!!!!

20. Drama?
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 12:13 PM by HuckleB
Hardly. It's got as little drama as possible. It's a good thing the rest of the world reads, so it can keep up with the soap operas surrounding F1, or it wouldn't have a following at all. Interest? Sure, but looking at the NFL, that doesn't mean much, and it doesn't make it a sport. Technology? Sure. But that doesn't make it a sport. Investment? Also doesn't make it a sport. Strange argument, dude.

As for dander, this is a sports forum. It's all dander. And of course it's going to fly when someone makes a strange argument.

:)

Salud.
