If we're judging the greatest QB by Championship wins---shouldn't that be Bart Starr?

Dude won 3 NFL titles before the Super Bowl came along and then won the first two Super Bowls.

That's 5 NFL Championships.

So---by that standard, a standard used by some on this forum, Bart Starr is the best ever.

3. How many Super Bowls did old Bart win?
Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 08:54 AM by Upton
I believe 2...stats before the merger are virtually worthless. Those NFL Championships were accomplished against a much smaller pool of teams.

On Edit: Let me add that Joe Montana remains unquestionably the greatest QB in NFL history...

4. That's to your standard---obviously.
How many NFL Championships did Joe Montana win?

I contend that he won 4. Would you agree?

6. To further prove my point
lets look at a couple other standards:

TD/Int

Montana-273/139

Starr-152/138

League MVP Awards

Montana-2

Starr-1

QB Rating

Montana-92.3

Starr-80.5

Pro Bowl Selections

Montana-8

Starr-4

Starr was undoubtedly one of the finest QBs in history, he's certainly in the top ten, but in Montana's class...no way.

5. That's ridiculous
By your logic, nothing should count before Carolina and Jacksonville joined the league, since the pool of teams was smaller before they arrived.

9. I'm talking about a significant difference
when Starr won his final title the NFL had only 16 teams, Montana 28 teams. In Starr's era, 1 or no playoff hurdles before going straight to the Championship game.

7. So there would have been much better players on all teams
making the play much more competitive??

10. If you are suggesting
the NFL was watered down in Montana's era...you could make that argument. However, I would counter that college football was played at a much higher level in the 80's as opposed to 50's or 60's..players bigger, stronger, faster....all that translated to the NFL.

12. And nothing in the NHL mattered until the Sharks joined the League.
Those original six teams that played for over half a century? Pffffft. Worthless.

16. Only to eliminate players from the dead ball era.
Next we deal with real QBs who got yardage and TDs, not dinkers who did what Coach ordered.

He didn't call his own plays or play both ways.

Quarterbacks used to become starters for their smarts. Now, that helps, but is no longer necessary.

24. If only SB championships count
Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 11:39 PM by hughee99
Then Montana doesn't stand alone

Granted, Montana was a far superior QB (and I'm a big fan of his), but if your only counting SB championships, they both have 4.

And you might want to keep an eye on this guy (if he comes back).

And this guy...

23. I was thinking that when I read the title of the OP.
Graham played from '46 to '55. During that time, the Browns went to their league's championship every single season, winning 7 of them and losing three.

21. My younger son
used to ask me who was the "greatest" boxer/heavyweight champion/etc all the time when he was young. I used to tell him that I prefer to "rank" athletes in their own era. It's a difficult thing, comparing great athletes from different eras .... would, for example, one take Jack Johnson in the context of his era, or attempt to insert him into the modern sport (which would most likely improve his ability to compete). I assume that this is similar to athletes in other sports.

Still, by all objective measures, Ali was the Greatest. By all subjective measures, too.
