I would define home team as any a team in the metropolitan area that you lived in during your formative years as a sports fan.

I would say that the team that's merely closest to you, but perhaps based in a city dozens or hundreds of miles away would not be considered a "home team".

I grew up in the mid-to-late 80s, in Florida. The Marlins didn't come to be until '93, and the closest team was the Braves. The distance from Miami to Atlanta is over 650 miles - am I supposed to be a Braves fan? What then happens to that allegiance when the Marlins enter the league in the Braves' division?

Anyway - I caught on as Yankees fan because they were on TV a lot even in the late 80s, when they were awful, and they had an iconic player in Don Mattingly. That's pretty much my story.

I spent my first four years in Cincinnati but spent summers with my Dad out there. I also have a ton of relatives in Cleveland and have visited there on a regular basis and spent quite a bit of time there. I have also lived in Metro DC for 35 years.
I actually do like teams from both those cities but prefer Washington teams. I think you can root for whatever team you identify with the most...be it where you grew up or where you were born or even what team you were able to watch growing up. I know a lot of people who became fans of teams like the Cowboys because they grew up in an area where they had no professional franchise and thats who they saw on TV most of the time. I actually am fine with that.
People root for who they root for. And I have to give madinmaryland props for NOT being a fairweather fan of the Cowboys. He didn't jump on them in the 90's and jump off them after they started sucking again.

I root for the teams I like, and have stuck by for years. I live in San Francisco and
rooted for the Lakers, I root for the VanCouver Canucks, because they were my first hockey
team I went to see. I root for the 49ers because my dad took me to games ...and I root for the Los Angeles Angels because I liked them better than any other team.

Those are my teams. Oh sure, I like the Giants sometimes..but they are not my team. When the Giants
played the Angels in the World Series I rooted for the Angels. My dad rooted for the Giants. He didn't mind we had opposing teams. He was disappointed they lost, but he was happy that I was happy that my team won.

Loyalty has to be earned. It doesn't go necessarily to where you live. Yeah, I'm proud to be an American but also proud of my Japanese and Korean roots. Who would I root for in the Olympics?
Maybe all three. It depends on who is competing. I would probably root for team USA over the other teams but why do I have to be loyal to any one team or player just because they are from my home town or not? It's a deficiency of character. Almost universally, these people pick the most hated team of the city they live in just to irritate. Or they pick a lately successful team just to try and glom on to their success. I know people like this. There is no real joy for them though. Take the Giants fan I know for instance, last year they won the Super Bowl and he got to celebrate with no one at all. No one to high five, no one to drink with, no parade to go to. What good was it? It basically amounted to and meant nothing. The reverse happened for the Mets fan I know. Last year the Phillies won the World Series and this city went berserk, an outpouring of joy and love unlike anything we've seen in nearly 30 years. 2 million people celebrated on Broad Street and he got to enjoy none of it. If you move to a different city you can keep your allegiances but if you are born somewhere and root for someone else, usually you're just an asshole frontrunning fraud.
