School board brings back paddling with parental permission
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Twiggs County principals will be pulling out their dusty paddles when school resumes and using them when students act up.

At least that's the school system's aim.

The Twiggs County school board reinstated its corporal punishment policy this summer to allow students to be spanked to curb misbehavior.

Some board members felt that in many cases, detention for students or a scolding wasn't working.

3. Bad as Twiggs County is, it is better than where I live.
At least in Twiggs county the default is to not spank without parental permission. Here, the default is to use corporal punishiment unless the parents opt to forbid them to use it.

4. As long as they have the parent's permission
I have no problem with it.

I went to one (private) school where paddling was done.

I went to another (a quaker one) where it wasn't.

I've seen both sides, but since schools are acting in loco parentis, imo, it's up to the parents to ok it or not

6. Crap. Is this 2008?
I personally think that many schools, mine included, need more discipline, but I strongly object to this type of punishment. I could never condone humiliation and violence. Besides, in most cases (and only in my experience,) the students who most need discipline and structure are NOT the ones whose parents would approve such a thing, anyway.
