Mother Records Autistic Child's Alleged Abuse

ATLANTA -- Stefan is an 11-year-old boy with Autism. A judge ruled he was physically and verbally abused at school.

11Alive has learned from the Deputy Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools that the teacher involved in this story is "no longer in the classroom."

<skip>

Stefan cannot speak. He has Autism, and is non-verbal.

He could not tell his parents -- couldn't tell anyone -- what happened to him. But he had a mother who believed, before this happened, that something was terribly wrong at his school.

<skip>

"It's about the size of a quarter," Carolyn said about a microphone she sewed into Stefan's shirt. She sent him to school with it on October 21.

It would be his last day at Marshall.

With the microphone hidden at the base of Stefan's neck, picking up the sounds around him, the Ferraris listened to the adults in the room talk about the size of a boyfriend's genitals.

"The man I'm dating is intelligent. But he has a small penis. You can't throw a pebble into the ocean. Does it matter? Does size matter? Yes it does."

The adults talked about drinking.

1. Oh, Christ. They're not pieces of wood...
They're aware, they just don't interact the way other people do. It infuriates me that I couldn't get to be a teacher because my brain can't process algebra (it's geek to me) yet people like this are in the classrooms every day. How do I know? Because I went to 9 different junior highs and 7 different high schools and can count the number of truly clued-in teachers on my fingers. Yes, I know there are some really good ones out there, but there are TOO MANY of these ones too. Stuck on stupid.

2. Well I haven't worked with any like this
Hopefully they will lose their jobs. The recorded conversation alone is enough, IMO. Don't even need those bruises to know these teachers need to go.

5. They apparently just don't get it...
Autistic kids (or people in general) are ALIVE in there, so what they hear affects them, even if it's not readily apparent. There's a major disconnect there and those people shouldn't be teaching.

4. I wanted to teach English...
Can't do algebra. Just can't. Something about sequencing really screws me up.

7. Isn't it nice how society continues to evolve?
Oops, I mean devolve...

I think we were somewhat evolved, once...

And I don't mean the media as much as how people seem to operate in general.
