Jeb Bush ally in FL Senate files legislation to gut teacher tenure, forcing tougher requirements
The hidden fangs of Jeb Bush are again on display.

When John "We Despise Education" Thrasher forced his way back into the state Senate and now doubles as the new head of Florida's GOP, we knew this development was only a matter of time.

John Thrasher is Jeb Bush's **Education Agenda** battering ram.

Teachers won't like Thrasher's tenure bill

Tampa Bay's The Buzz

As expected, Sen. John Thrasher has filed legislation proposing a controversial overhaul of teacher tenure, essentially gutting current protections for classroom teachers and establishing more stringent requirements for end-of-year exams and teacher evaluations.

SB6 also would require any school districts that fail to comply with the new rules to levy an additional school tax -- and the state would withhold a matching amount of state general revenue dollars from that district as a penalty.

Starting in July 2010, all newly hired teachers would be on probationary contracts for five years and could then get annual contracts - but only with stiffer rules for evaluations and certifications.

A similar push petered out in the Senate last year, but this time around there's more political mojo behind it thanks to Thrasher, the RPOF chair, and co-sponsors including Sen. Don Gaetz. Senate leadership has deemed the legislation a priority, and former Gov. Jeb Bush's education foundation is backing it -- more political mojo.

Thrasher, R-Orange Park, just got named RPOF chairman. He is a Bush ally and hard-charging former House speaker who, according to legend, helped Bush sketch out the overhaul of Florida's education system on a cocktail napkin.

The hard rightists are on course for utter destruction.

Their own.
