Schools Matter: Obama's NCLB 2.0: Worse Than the Bush Version
Obama's working overtime to not get himself re-elected:

And that is exactly what is going to happen, according to the Prez. Sort of. What no one outside the Walton, Gates, and Broad camps could have imagined, however, is that NCLB 2.0 would be even more draconian than the torture of AYP under the original NCLB. At least with AYP, there was always some small chance that your low class school could cram, pray, or cheat its way to making the cut score for the never-ending annual tests.

Now with the Oligarchs' new plan, the bottom 5 percent of schools will be targeted each year for "turnaround," and it doesn't matter what the poorest schools do, because the poverty that assures them their status at the bottom of the barrel makes them sure targets for conversions of urban schools into apartheid charter chain gangs, either that or the second-most popular option of firing all the school staff.

Because the annual testing will continue unabated under the Oligarchs' plan that Obama will present, this new system will pit the poor against the poorer and the poorer against the poorest, because the only thing that will keep your school off the shutdown, er, turnaround list is some other school in your vicinity that is doing worse still. No targets, no impossible goals. AYP be gone, they don't need you anymore. Under NCLB 2.0, there will be a never-ending list of the "bottom five percent" of schools every year, and there is nothing any school can do except to hope there is some schmucky school further down the road that is even poorer.

What a freaking disaster.

1. And god help the poor slobs
Who took the lower paying teaching jobs in the poorer school districts because they felt they could help more kids, or do more good, or pay back some social debt.

Prepared to be the focus of scorn and disrespect, and oh yes, be fired, no matter how great a job you may be doing.

4. For the poor schools to "improve," you have to fire the KIDS
Only if the KIDS are moved around to other schools or fired will the "poor" schools improve on testing, assuming one takes those things even seriously.

3. It IS. Obama is just the WORST in American history
on education. Bush II doesn't even approach this, although he laid the groundwork.

6. appearances are deceiving....
over 50% of the kids in chicago last year....

knew of someone that was shot

heard gunfire to , from school ,and in school

over 30 kids were murdered during last years school season

then add in broken homes,no adult figure that works, and no jobs if they graduate

the ones who can leave go and never come back

that`s just what i can think of now.....

7. They have been used as political pawns. We failed them.
They are just another sign that all of our institutions are failing. Privatizing won't help. There is plenty of history with Private schools. We already know where that will end up. Down the road at a "later" financial stress point they will gradually get underfunded until we get back to the historical private school model, schools for the rich.

We are so ignorant of history.

11. exactly. prison schools for the poor, expensive private schools for the rich, & the shrinking
middle bankrupting themselves to send the kiddies into "decent" private schools that give them a chance at "advancement" in the dog-eat-dog nightmare world of the future.

8. He's doing what Bush couldn't do.
If Bush did this there would be a revolt but because he is doing it people are shutting up.

10. They are cheering it on
because a dem is doing it and that makes it ok or they just have it in for teachers. Some cannot admit that parents need to take responsibility too.

12. Disaster Indeed
I have been contacting people about this bullshit. I will not say who, at least not on these boards, but they are people who have a lot more power than I do to stop this crap. I have recently been given an opportunity, and I won't pass it up.

P.S. tony, this should be in GDP, please consider it. Oh yeah, keep up the good work! I give you an A+++++++++!
