Get ready for another round of teacher-bashing
Not that I condone what this teacher did, it's pretty stupid. But, as usual, those with low information on the subject will chime in and demand all the teachers' heads on a platter. Oh wait. That's already happened and Obama-Duncan praised it while only looking at some of the data, not the whole picture.

1. I replied to it
Not that it will help. I'll probably just get bashed.

2. A student would have been expelled
Why not the teacher.

3. Agree
I have no problem with disciplining the teacher in question and said so.

7. They've all been fired, but are expected to teach a full semester as if
nothing had happened, just be your cheerful selves, doing what the powers that be want while hanging you out to dry. They're beyond help.

Amazing that the management of the district could possibly be so unaware of standard termination practices, and they do not involved leaving people in place for months after they've been fired.

Do I condone the behavior? Nope. But anyone who doesn't find it typical human behavior better check again.

8. Expected?
You don't think they WANT to work through the end of the school year?

just be your cheerful selves

No... but maybe expecting him to avoid showing himself to be less mature than the kids he teaches wouldn't have been out of the question.

standard termination practices, and they do not involved leaving people in place for months after they've been fired.

Sorry... you don't know what you're talking about. In reality, their contract requires that they be given notice by March 1st if they are going to be fired at the end of the year.

9. Their contract requires a public demonization of the entire group as well?
I already said that I don't condone the teacher's actions, but if I had to find a worse example of ways to fire people, I'd be hard pressed.

I simply pointed out the human reaction, ignored by the so-called "management" of the district. BTW, I was in management for banks and two oilfield supply companies before I took up teaching, and I fired and hired dozens of people for both. Never had an amateur night like this, either.

10. How does this demonize the entire group?
It's his actions that hurt their reputation by association, not any actions that are taken against him.

11. You do not think that the public spectacle of announcing that all the
teachers were fired and the President chiming in that he thinks they deserved it is in any way negative? Is it a compliment?

Yes, the actions taken against these teachers, a group firing in a very public and mean-spirited way, are the proximate cause of this teacher's misbehavior. Evidence? Did it before this? Nope.

Now, if you think the firing of all these teachers was handled in a humane and professional way, we have little to talk about from here. In fact, nothing. Do you teach, are you an administrator, or not really working in education?

12. Is that what they STARTED with?
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 12:35 PM by FBaggins
It certainly was in OTHER areas of the country without it becoming a "public spectacle"

The decision that made them a target came from the president and his education secretary.

14. Sorry...
...I didn't realize that this was your forum. I see no reason to enable your evasion.

His behavior was unacceptable REGARDLESS of whether he had been fired and/or whether that action was warranted or handled properly.

16. No, I'm sorry and I didn't know that this was your forum.
My apologies and a good day to you, sir or ma'am, although I know you don't need my apology, since your behavior would not be affected in any way by mine.

I'm not quite so noble, however, and after three decades in education, cannot afford to give you a course in education at this time, for free.

19. Lol... a "course in education" ?
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 02:13 PM by FBaggins
Says the guy (or gal) who claimed that "standard termination practices" were something other than what the contract required? The one who wanted to defend a guy even his union won't defend?

Thanks anyway. Sounds like that "education" would be worth every penny of that price... but not much more. :)

Too many do feel that teachers are neither human nor serve a purpose.

5. Another round?
That implies that it stops at some point.

Bashing is more like a marathon around here.
