Layoff notices set to hit teachers' mailboxes
More than 10,100 teachers will see pink slips in their mailboxes over the next few days as districts up and down California meet a Saturday deadline to warn staff of anticipated layoffs due to the state's budget crisis.

...

With the governor proposing a $4 billion budget cut to state schools next fiscal year, local education officials are scrambling to adjust their spending plans. Given that 80 percent or more of a district's budget is spent on salaries, the only way to close the gap is to lose staff, many administrators said.

This is the first round of pink slips, which are preliminary, and is designed to comply with a state law requiring notification. Districts must tell those teachers actually losing their jobs by May 15 - still well before officials know how much money they will actually get from the state. That won't happen until the Legislature and governor agree on a budget in July or perhaps even August.

In the meantime, school districts have to guess about the number of layoffs they will need to balance their budgets and generally notify more teachers than they expect to let go.

SFGate

There is no cause for concern, the Gov. is forward thinking when simultaneously decreasing school funding and increasing corrections budget. Corrections is one of U.S. largest employers. If needed .... :sarcasm:

1. When it is time to ask the question, which is more important

to Amerika, bombs or books? Ask yourself when the last time was we borrowed 3 trillion bucks from a competitor to buy books?

We have spent less in real dollars in Education in America every year since 1968. Compare and contrast that to the budget of the police/war state.

This is the nation the Cons wanted. And I say it is time to completely utterly destroy the Cons.

10. There were two
Jarvis-Gann (Prop 13) and the Gann Limit (Prop 4). There has been some slight mods to them over time and a couple of backdoors tried and shut.

9. It was after Reagan
Between property tax limitations and court decisions mandating equal education across districts, CA State government became the major funding source of public education. They literally pay the district for each day for each student. Its one of the reasons homework packages are pushed so hard, especially in smaller districts. Truancy is watched hard for the same reason. This started in the 80s and has only gotten worse.

3. I moved to CA 5 years ago
and I haven't met anyone who values education unless they actually work at a school.

When it comes to attitudes toward education, CA is much more like my native Alabama than Montgomery County, MD, where I lived for many years.

I'm just lucky that my children went to school in MD and not in CA.

I fear for the kind of education my CA grandchildren will get.

5. If They Can Create More MINDLESS MORONS, They'll Succeed
If they are able to create more IDIOTS, like our company secretary, then they can have a shot at winning elections in the future. She makes about $20K/year, part-time. Lives in a small apartment. Has a daughter who's also an IDIOT, whom she's constantly lending money to, because she's always getting into some trouble. Currently lives with a "bf" who hits her. This secretary makes the statement....."I Like Bush." Fucking MORON!

But that's their goal after all, create MORONS, who have lots & lots of OFFSPRING MORONS. More folks to put big Man, Woman, Child, Dog, Cat, Etc....Pictures on their GIANT SUV'S.
