Panicked children were "jumping off the bus'' as an out-of-control school bus lurched down a hill and struck a bridge abutment, one witness said.

"The kids were in a panic -- they were jumping off,'' said Conner Strickland, manager of the Marathon gas station on Commercial Road.

It was parked at the gas station about 8:20 a.m. when the driver got gas and went to the restroom.

While the driver was in the restroom, Strickland said, the bus started rolling downhill toward the Central Viaduct, just east of the Lorain-Carnegie (Hope Memorial) Bridge...
