Bush administration continues to blame low graduation rates on public schools
Bush administration continues to blame low graduation rates on public schools

The Bush Administration has launched its latest attack on public schools, placing the blame for low graduation rates entirely on the schools, when it is clearly a societal problem.

The latest charges were made by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings as she campaigned for a reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, something which is unlikely to happen during an election year.

While the push for having a uniform graduation standard is something that is long overdue, any effort to combat low graduation rates strictly through schools is doomed for failure. Mrs. Spellings makes no mention of parents who do not care about their children's education (and unfortunately, there are many of those), children whose home lives include physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse, communities in which poverty is a fact of life. Unless everyone teams together to combat this problem, low graduation rates will continue to be a serious problem in this country.

1. We live in a rural midwest town with a high immigrant population
We mentor three kids. The parents are not equipped to help their kids with homework etc. They are wonderful people who just need a little help due to their situations. Without our help these kids would struggle through school until they eventually dropped out and got a minimum wage job at the turkey plant. With a little help I believe we may have future doctors and lawyers on our hands.
The teachers work their asses off and really care. But the individual attention that is needed is just not possible in a classroom with 25 to 30 kids in the same situation.
As usual the Bush administration takes a few ?facts? and fits them to their narrative.

3. The thing I feel best about is that I can feel that we are changing
attitudes toward education in this town. We got a call from a parent just a couple days ago for help. We work with one of their son's friends. His friend's grades are up markedly and his attitude has changed dramatically. So slowly getting good grades is becoming cool. And having a goal such as going to the university is cool. If we can change that before they become tied to gangs or drugs it will be great!

5. good for you!
You can move here too! So many parents are so overworked, and overwrought they really need a hand, its not that they don't care, its that they are "bushed" working harder for less, you perform a worthy service, is there a website?
