January 20, 1961: KKK's Grand Wizard delivers Kennedy's inaugural invocation |
|
"While controversial, President-elect Kennedy's choice of the Grand Wizard to deliver the inaugural invocation pleased a large spectrum of the electorate. Two representative leaders of this base of voters, Bull Connor and George Wallace, applauded Kennedy's selection. Kennedy deflected the whining criticism of black civil rights leaders by defending his choice as a show of inclusiveness. Asked for further comment, Kennedy stated, *Those people* just need to get over it."
