Son of Dallas Homophobic Chuch Pastor Arrested in Police Sex Sting

Talk about timely. We asked you this morning if gay sex stings are inherently homophobic and now, news is coming out of Dallas that Jermaine Donnell Jakes, the 29 year old son of T.D. Jakes of Potter's House, a homophobic megachurch pastor who has declared homosexuality “brokenness” and declared that he would never hire a sexually active gay person" was arrested for publicly exposing himself to police officers in a a gay sex sting in Dallas' Kiest Park.

The Dallas Voice writes about the January 3rd arrest:

According to an arrest affidavit, the detectives were conducting an investigation into citizen complaints of sexual activity when they observed Jakes and several other unknown males park their vehicles in the lot east of the park at 2106 W. Kiest Blvd.

The detectives followed Jakes into a wooded area, where he approached them with his penis exposed through his unzipped pants, the affidavit states. Jakes masturbated for several seconds while making eye contact with one of the detectives.

T.D. Jakes is the founder of the Potters House, a 30,000-member church in South Dallas. A vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, he’s been criticized by HIV/AIDS activists for undermining prevention of the disease by stigmatizing homosexuality and drug use.

According to a Dallas Police Department arrest warrant affidavit obtained by CBS 11 News, on Jan. 3 Jakes exposed himself to two undercover vice detectives at Keist Park.

Jermaine Jakes has been identified by various reports as the son of T.D. Jakes and also as his step-son. Faith Johnson, the attorney, told CBS 11 News he was T.D. Jakes' step-son. But Curtis Coats III, who is the Chief of Communications for The Potter's House said at various times T.D. Jakes has identified Jermaine using both terms, and said either is acceptable.

just think what it must have been like growing up in that environment, having to hide your true nature.

About 20 years ago, I attended the Dances of Universal Peace in South Dallas (at a Unitarian Church, if memory serves). Nice mix of folks, including a fellow who always showed up in a dress. I was glad he felt comfortable enough and welcome enough to come to join us.

10. What's really sad is

not the fact that the son or step-son is gay. The sad part is how the church will use this incident as further proof of the degenerate sex perverts we really are. I have been doing a lot of research lately on the 1973 decision of the APA which declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Numerous religious websites are reporting false evidence which states the APA caved under pressure from the gay activist of the time and from within their own organization with closeted Psychiatrists in making their decision. The fact this involves the Potter House will no doubt only fuel the fire in the argument that homosexuality is indeed an abnormality. But, what people don't realize is that the extreme prejudice and sometimes downright hatred of gay men and women sometimes create these situations. I am not saying it is cause/effect necessarily because nobody ever reads of women being arrested in parks or bathrooms. But surely there is some correlation between the two, add the pressure of having a father like that and growing up in an already hostile environment. Will be interesting to see how this plays out and I hope the Dallas Voice continues with the story. I live in Dallas and just might contact them to see if they will.
