:bounce:

And in his acceptance speech, which is making me cry, is taking people to task for voting for Prop 8.

3. Haven't seen the movie yet -- but they're holding it over at nearby theaters . . .
Penn seemed sure to win -- great subject, timely -- and Harvey Milk!!! Wow!

Good news!

And glad to hear about his speech!

4. From an acting perspective...
I think Rourke deserved the Oscar. He gave the better performance. But at the same time, Penn was great. I loved his speech! Especially when he said "People of CA that voted for prop 8 SHOULD be ashamed of themselves!"

5. Dude no one in that movie was acting
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 12:15 AM by Chovexani
The only reason Rourke was even in the running was because it made a good feel good, comeback story. But let's face it, he was basically playing himself in that movie.

Maybe in some other year but not in one where we got Penn as Milk. Even Frank Langella deserved it over Rourke.

7. What are you talking about?
You know nothing about acting if you are honestly making the claim that no one in that movie acted. That is most absurd comment I have ever heard. Rourke connected with a lot of issues that his character faced in the movie, and because of that he was able to deliver an all the more sincere, heartbreaking, and deep portrayal.

8. I saw it, and I'm sorry, but that movie was not that deep.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 12:47 AM by Chovexani
Mickey Rourke was playing a washed up loser trying to make a comeback. I don't care how moving it was, he was playing himself. It took zero effort. It would have been as much bullshit as Courtney Love winning for The People vs. Larry Flynt.

If you saw Milk, and the transformation that Sean Penn underwent to become Milk, you would not be taking issue with Penn's win. From the minute he stepped on screen, I forgot I was watching Sean Penn. I felt like I was watching Harvey. (I saw The Life and Times documentary before I went to see Milk, as a comparison--and he WAS Harvey Milk.) Ditto with James Brolin and Dan White, in any other year he would have won Best Supporting but Heath was just too fucking amazing.

Mickey Rourke? Was playing Mickey Rourke in a marginably more watchable Mickey Rourke movie. Marisa Tomei was Yet Another Hooker/Stripper With a Heart of Gold.

It was mediocre at best.

9. I never took issue with Sean winning
I said I would have preferred Rourke winning. I'm glad I don't have to say much though for you to sound like an idiot. Stop trying to debate with people for no reason. I said I was happy Sean won; he was also great.

And how dare you say what Rourke did took zero effort. You have no idea of the hardships he has experienced and the pain he had to relive to endure that role. You just sound obnoxious.

18. Look, I like Rourke, too, as an actor, but I like it better than Penn advanced human rights
in a very public way last night. I'm pretty sure that the Rourke would not have used the world stage in the same way for the greater good. It wasn't that many months ago that Rourke used the term "faggot" as a slur, and more recently, he called Sean Penn a "homophobe." All in all, both Rourke and Penn got what they earned last night.

P.S. Welcome to DU. Once you've had a chance to look around our community a bit more, you'll see that Chovexani, the DUer you're so intent on insulting, is a respected and beloved DUer for good reason.

20. Why is it I can't say that...
I enjoyed Rourke's performance better? At the same time, I am very happy that Sean won because he DID use the stage to defend gay rights and criticize those people that voted for prop 8. I definitely agree that Sean gave an amazing performance; I just felt that Rourke's performance was moving beyond words.

And don't tell me I'm so intent on insulting someone when he started debating with me for no reason. I'm allowed to share my opinion too.

21. Of course you're allowed to share your opinion.
Can you not respect/understand that some of us here are long-time fans of Sean Penn, whose past performances rose tp meet not just consumer expectations of an actor/product but our _IDEALS_???????

I'm glad you found Rourke's performance moving. I found his "9-1/2" weeks performance incredibly sexy and even moving. BUT, you're posting this in DU's GLBT forum; perhaps a defense of Rourke, whose own public comments have defined him as a homophobe, might play better somewhere besides DU's GLBT Forum.

By the way, Chovexani isn't debating with you "for no reason." You can be sure _she_ has a reason.

22. Well, I guess you are right
I was looking at their performances without considering their personal lives whatsoever. Just from an acting perspective, I think Rourke deserved the Oscar, but as I said, I am very happy Sean won. His performance in Milk was also excellent. Maybe this post would have been more appropriate on an imdb message board.

Anyway, I am gay, so you should have no doubt whatsoever how delighted I truly am that Sean won. I actually had no idea that Rourke has made homophobic remarks in the past; that makes me sad, but I still appreciate his wonderful acting abilities.

23. I'm glad you're here, and I welcome you, but context is about more than the actors' personal lives.
Very often, it's about _our_ personal lives, our ideals and what resonates with us as members of the audience. I love Mickey Rourke, truly I do. I am simply convinced that Penn drew from maybe a deeper place (as a straight man with progressive ideals playing a gay man living his life) than Rourke (drawing essentially on his own screw-ups and comeback). We can agree to disagree on these finer points. I'm just explaining why it is that Penn's performance and acceptance speech has so profoundly resonates with me personally.

15. I saw both and yes, I totally agree
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 10:00 AM by RufusTFirefly
I had almost the identical reaction at "Milk" that you had. I'm not a big Sean Penn fan. In fact, I'm not usually an actors moviegoer. I'm a screenwriters/directors moviegoer. Nonetheless, Sean Penn, even though I knew full well who he was, became Harvey Milk. He completely, utterly convinced me. It was an amazing performance.

Meanwhile, "The Wrestler," which I went to primarily because it was a Darren Aronofsky movie, was like a reject from a screenwriting class. The story was appallingly simplistic and cliched. The notion that Rourke had somehow become the toast of the town was absurd to me. And as for Marisa Tomei, she's often an excellent actress, but in "The Wrestler" she was a walking bad movie stereotype.

"The Wrestler" was like a movie of the week with a staple gun. It was like something Barton Fink had written for Jack Lipnick but without that Barton Fink feeling.

...

And by the way, I loved that Penn took the opportunity while accepting his Oscar to whack intolerant people upside the head. The remarks of Penn and Dustin Lance Black provided a wonderful contrast in heartfelt approaches to an abomination of discrimination.

26. He was very good, but I disagree. I think it was close, but Penn's task was more difficult.
While Rourke's character was beautifully played and a physical endurance test, Penn's job was to embody a legend--one who exists on film. He made people--including people who lived through Milk's death--forget that he wasn't Harvey. That's tough. And the fact that Rourke was typecast in the role didn't get him the win. But he won the Golden Globes, which these days is almost more important.

They're like dragon's teeth, or tribbles, but without the positive benefits.

and he did a damned good job portraying Harvey Milk.

Milk deserved the honor given to that film last night. It was an important story and it needs to be told again and again.
