So proud of Sean Penn and his victory in MILK.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 08:17 PM by Mike 03
He's been one of my favorite actors since DEAD MAN WALKING. He has so much integrity and talent, and I was so proud of him to hear he had won for MILK.

This will be a test for theaters like the one near mine, that did not show BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN or refuses to show "controversial movies."

Now we have a winner, MILK. I want to see it. Show it, damn you.

The burden is on independent theaters in reclusive, conservative counties like mine. Are they going to have to guts and fairness to show this amazing film, or do we have to wait until it comes out on video.

I'm so happy he won Best Actor I could scream.

Sean, you rock...

5. Was that really necessary?

I mean, I loved Milk and thought it deserved to win Best Picture, but I saw Slumdog too and have no problems with it winning BP. It's not as if Milk went home empty-handed or just with meaningless tech awards, either. It was rightfully recognized with a pair of the top awards and we got two solid speeches for equality that ended up on pretty much everyone's "best moments of the show" list.

Your witty little turn of phrase is especially offensive if you know anything about that movie and what the term "slumdog" means. But thanks for doing your part to perpetuate the myth that to be for LGBT you have to hate on brown people.

2. If you get a chance to see "Milk", you will not be disappointed.
I just saw it yesterday. It was an incredibly powerful film. Who would have thought that 30 years later we would still have to take to the streets to protest for equal rights. Makes me sad, but also makes me motivated to continue fighting.

4. He raised a good point. This hate harms the haters too.
Their shame will live on for generations.

8. What kills me about the haters is
that the entire thing is so trendy, mindless, and robotic. If you stop half of the haters and ask them why, they cannot tell you except the person next to them said it was the way to be.

There is nothing that perplexes me as much as trends/fads amongst the hate mongers. Next week, someone could say bread was sinful and next thing you know, there would be bread burnings and bans on grain. It might sound preposterous, but it's not. They burned records when some preacher said rock and roll was the devil's music.

6. It was a terrific movie
a great story but with a horrific end.

for Milk and all the ideas he championed and the progressive causes that faltered while Dianne Feinstein was mayor.

for Moscone, the first really great progressive mayor of SF, who had the courage to stand up for the rights of all.

these two men were extremely decent and down to earth individuals.

their loss was personal to so many but political also as it was a setback for so many important causes. although DiFi was pro gay rights to a large extent, she was not as supportive or as progressive overall as Moscone was or as the board was with Milk there.

10. Penn totally deserved Best Actor, but Slumdog deserved Best Picture.
Milk was very good, very very good, but Slumdog was better.

Of course, they were different kinds of movies. It's like deciding which is better, jazz or classical; it's just personal preference.
