Vermont Gov. Douglas announces he will veto same-sex marriage bill |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 01:52 PM by t0dd
(03-25) 11:39 PDT Montpelier, Vt. (AP) --
Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas says he will veto a bill to legalize gay marriage if it passes the Legislature.
The Republican had said even before Wednesday's announcement that he was against same-sex marriage.
He also has said lawmakers shouldn't have spent their time on the bill this session because of the economy and the state's budget deficit.
A bill passed the Senate this week that would replace the state's first-in-the-nation civil unions law with one that allows gay and lesbian couples to marry. The House is now considering similar legislation.

We can get support from 2/3rds of the Vermont House of Represenatives and that will override his veto.

3. From what I've heard, they've had trouble in the past |

getting enough votes to override. I'll try to remain optimistic.

4. Well, now is the time for everyone to take action.. |
|
even people that don't reside in Vermont. We need to contact representatives there. We need to do everything we can. All we need is 101 out of 150 and the democrats have a huge majority.

There, I said it.
Are there email addresses for Vermont reps that might be waffling? I have time to write a few emails today and I know nothing about the Vermont legislature.

7. Politicians are really great at rationalizing their own bigotry |
|
I love this religion they follow, that is cool with torture and illegal war, but just can not bear the idea of equal rights for all people. The alter of discrimination, such a holy place to be.

I intend to spend this evening contacting as many Vermont representatives as I can. And I also want to personally start the "Anyone but Douglas 2010" campaign. There will be political consequences for his decision, as he knows a majority of Vermonters support same-sex marriage.

Please Inform Governor Douglas that Civil Rights Legislation for his Gay Citizens is not a Waste of Time:
Governor Jim Douglas 109 State Street, Pavilion Montpelier, VT 05609-0101
Follow-up with a telephone call to 802 828-3333. I want to emphasize that regular mail is far more persuasive than using the contact for on the Governor's website.

18. The legislature needs to make him call his bluff. |
|
The legislature needs to pass same sex marriage just to insure that this is not just a hypothetical thought, that the governor would actually take an active step to slam the door on civil rights and equality.

20. Same-sex marriage takes up too much of the legislators time. |
|
>>>>He also has said lawmakers shouldn't have spent their time on the bill this session because of the economy and the state's budget deficit.>>>>>
So he's going to make sure it consumes MORE of their time by vetoing it and sending it back for further debate, speechifying, posturing horsetrading and dealmaking.
Glad to know he's real worried about the economy. No flags related to this issue to wrap himself in, so I guess feigned concern about the economy will have to do.

21. The quote reads like he wants it to pass with the supermajority |
|
It actually reads like he's announcing this as a tactic, expecting to pass either way but trying to get the Dems to work a bit harder so he doesn't have a choice. We here may or may not think that this man has name recognition (Governor Who?) or potential, but he probably thinks that and the rise of the idiot Palin has probably given all sorts of hope to local Republicans that they can become national figures if they get the pulse right. One thing which seems common to all political executives is that they would prefer to make no important decisions, because important decisions are used against you.

23. Just look at the smugness of this comment.. |
|
"He also has said lawmakers shouldn't have spent their time on the bill this session because of the economy and the state's budget deficit." and tell me I am somehow too violent to want to throw an egg at his face.
This should be an indication that we will only get an inch if we fight for a foot, and, therefore, should not even be willing to settle for anything but absolute equality.

and make it clear that Vermont is moving forward without him. :)

25. Not unlike NH Democratic Governor who opposes marriage equality. |

"(NH)Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, is opposed to gay marriage, though he has not indicated whether he would veto the bill." http://www.365gay.com/blog/nh-gay-marriage-fails-by-one-vote/
