Gay Arizona Group May Launch Amendment Drive To Ban Same-Sex Marriage
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/06/062005arizona.htm

yeah, I was confused at first as well

In a bold move a gay rights group has organized to consider a drive to collect enough signatures to place a measure on the ballot to ban same-sex marriage but allow civil unions.

The aim is to provide an alternative to a proposed amendment already heading to voters to ban both marriage and any form of recognition of gay and lesbian couples.

The project is the being organized by a coalition formed by Steve May the former co-chairman of the Arizona Human Rights Fund.

2. Argh!!!!!!!!!
Okay as a gay man this pisses me off! I can understand why they are doing this though. They probably think that they at least have a snowballs chance with civil unions verses marriage with the voters. But the problem with civil unions and gays is that it still leaves us as a second class citizen. In other words, your not good or holy or Christian enough to be married, but your okay enough to get a civil union. Civil unions do not leave gay people as equals with the rest of the country.

3. More specifically....
Civil unions do not provide the same range of benefits and protections as a marriage.

4. While I don't believe in separate but 'equal'...
I must say that, temporarily, this could work out in our favor. One day a federal court will strike down all bans on same sex marriage, but until then, if it's civil unions or nothing, I'll take civil unions as I press for full equality.
