Committee says to cut school clubs
((From Gainesville, Ga.)

A White County schools subcommittee has recommended cutting all clubs in the school system months after students tried to form a gay support group.

Peers Rising In Diversity Education, a group formerly known as the Gay-Straight Alliance, received the go-ahead from the school March 22 after weeks of negotiations with the system and American Civil Liberties Union.

The school board agreed to allow the students to start the club, but later school administrators recommended eliminating all non-curricular clubs at White County High School.

In addition to PRIDE, the decision could affect clubs like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Key Club and Students Against Drunk Driving.
