Let's start calling it "Pro-marriage" |
|
Let's start referring to ourselves as "Pro-Marriage" and the conservatives as "Anti-Marriage".
It seems appropriate. Two people who love each other and want to get married should be able to get married - Pro-Marriage
Conservatives don't want people who love each other to get married, yet they obviously don't believe in the sanctity of marriage cause they all get divorced and won't ban that - Anti-Marriage

1. They aren't really anti-marriage, more like limited-marriage. |

4. I know...it's more of a psychological tactic... |

Like how they call themselves "Pro-Life" as if they're the only ones who care about "Life".

I've been married for almost 22 years. I think all Americans should be able to enjoy the benefits of marriage.

3. I think it should not even reference love. |

If two people want to engage in a a structured fiscal and familial legal arrangement with the purpose of defining and protecting their family and property gender should not enter as an issue. They shouldn't have to be gay to be same-gender marriage either, any more than there is currently a requirement that opposite gender marriage is composed of hetersexual partners. Marriage as currently defined is already a sham.
The fact is that I am not "allowed" to define my family unless I go get married to a someone of the opposite gender.
Marriage at the federal level has nothing to do with love. Marriage at the state's right level has nothing to do with enforceability at the federal level.
I can marry as many times as I want in different states, and throw a couple of civil unions, a handful of domestic partnerships and all to different people without federal recognition.
Seriously - if you are American and adult, YOU decide who you marry, not the state. I'm American. Let's define it as American, and anti-American.

6. You make a fair point. |

I have officiated 135 weddings / marriage ceremonies / commitment ceremonies. One two occasions the couples flat out told me they were getting married for legal purposes. They liked each other, were compatible and wanted the legal protections afforded by marriage but weren't in love with one another. Both couples were older and definitely emphatic that they didn't want any of the "lovey dovey" stuff in their ceremonies because it just wasn't applicable. Last I checked there wasn't anything in my state's statutes that said the couple had to be in love. Sadly, my state does specify that it must be a man and a woman.
As far as I am concerned, if two consenting adults understand and accept the consequences of their decision they should be afforded the choice as to whether or not to marry. Their gender and the reason for entering into the marriage contract is no one else's business.
