More lesbians than gay men marrying

According to Saskatchewan's Vital Statistics Office, 19 of the 30 same-sex marriages registered in the province have united lesbians. Though the numbers are still too small to point definitively to a trend, a similar skew is being recorded in provinces where the number of same-sex marriages is much larger.

Of the 2,098 same-sex marriages registered in B.C., 57 per cent have involved lesbian couples. The gap takes on greater significance in light of a Statistics Canada report that shows lesbians account for less than 46 per cent of homosexuals nationally.

Same-sex civil marriages became legal across Canada last week after the controversial Bill C-38 was passed by the Senate on Tuesday and given royal assent on Wednesday.
