Fort Worth mayor apologizes for raid on gay bar
Fort Worth mayor apologizes for raid on gay bar

(Fort Worth, Texas) Forth Worth’s mayor has apologized for a June raid on a Texas gay bar that sparked claims of brutality and procedure violations.

About 250 people packed City Council chambers Tuesday and another 150 watched on televisions in the hallway or overflow rooms as officials briefly discussed the June 28 raid that left one man hospitalized with a serious head injury.

At one point during Tuesday’s meeting, someone in the audience called out for an apology.

Mayor Mike Moncrief then said: “If you want an apology from the mayor of Fort Worth: I am sorry about what happened in Fort Worth.” The crowd erupted in applause and stood.

The Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission and Fort Worth Police Department are investigating the raid, which was conducted jointly by their agencies.

2. Investigating?
Why is it that police investigate themselves? Everywhere in the U.S., there are supposed to be checks and balances, accountability, except, it seems, when it comes to the police. A citizen review board, with investigative authority, would do a lot to take care of the out-of-control cop problem.

3. Pretty perfunctory as apologies go, don't you think?
Not to mention someone had to ask him for it. And he doesn't really say why he's sorry it happened. Is he sorry it happened because it was a gross abuse of power by a bunch of thugs in uniform and power-drunk state employees that left at least one person badly injured or is he sorry it happened because it has become such a royal pain in his ass?

Doesn't matter. Whatever the mayor's real feelings are, firing a few cops and homophobic bureaucrats and some hefty uncontested payouts by the city to the victims, especially to the guy in hospital, and pledging that it will not happen again would constitute the only apology that would mean anything to me.

4. He's sorry that things turned ugly for him, that's all.
That wasn't a real apology.

5. FBI
Any time something like this happens an independent panel from the FBI or another group should get involved.

6. Actually the apology was for injuring people in the raid not
that there was a raid in the first place.
