President Obama addresses discrimination in speech to NAACP

(New York) Last night, President Obama traveled to New York to address the NAACP at its Centennial Convention. President Obama took the opportunity to address a wide array of topics, including calling an end to the discrimination of African-American women, Latinos, Muslim Americans, and gays and lesbians.

In his speech, President Obama noted that though, “there probably has never been less discrimination in America than there is today,” he added that “the pain of discrimination is still felt in America.”

The president addressed several groups who are discriminated against, including African American women, Latinos, and Muslim Americans. President Obama also stated that discrimination is also felt “by our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights.”

1. Obama needs to tell this to the SCLC as well.
Shame on the SCLC.

2. So I guess Asians have got it made...
It's soooo nice not to have to deal with racists, bigots and xenophobic assholes the way that other non-white citizens and immigrants do.

4. That was my first thought, too.
Why are Asians always excluded in the list for US civil rights? My boss worked alongside MLK, and is well-versed on GLBT and Latino discrimination, but he always forgets to include Asians in the mix when fighting the dominant paradigm.

And while we're on the subject, what about Native Americans, where are their rights in the national the dialog?

5. kick ... here's another thread that's more than 24 hours . . . we need to extend that . ..
Meanwhile, I haven't read the article -- hope to be back later --

HOWEVER, IMO, we need to speak about discrimination more often as exploitation --

because that's really what it is . . . a system of exploitation for the profit

of the few based on myths of inferiority!!!
