Any recognition of same-sex relationships = marriage?
I wrote to my congressman asking his support of H.R. 3006 - the Uniting American Families Act. Though Mike Rogers (R-MI) has not had a friendly track record, he is my member of Congress and I wanted to weigh in with my opinion. In his reply, he stated "I generally do not support legal recognition of homosexual relationships as I believe a marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman."

So any legal recognition at all - being able to visit your partner in the hospital, having health care benefits for your partner's children, for just a few examples - will start a slippery slope that leads to gay marriage? I wouldn't be surprised if this is common thinking among Repugs.

3. Exactly. I just love it when homophobes try to get gays to answer,
"yeah, but how are you going to keep people from marrying their dogs? Aha, that's what I thought. So I don't think we want to legalize gay marriage." :eyes:

5. Some Freeper raised that issue during debate ...
... on a local domestic partnership ordinance locally. (Incidently, he was the husband of a real right-wing fundie/anti-abortion/anti-gay whack job.) He asked the city council "If you pass this, what's to keep me from marrying my dog?"

The answer to that question was shouted from the back of the hearing room: "That would be polygamy if you're married to two bitches."

4. Yep - that's the Wingnut perspective
If they can force us to have permanent single status, then reinstate cohabitation laws, they can effectively destroy our lives. This crap about being afraid to "recognize" reality is more of an indication of mental illness on the Congressman's part than any real commitment to a marriage institution that heteros haven't done a damned thing about protecting.

Hmm. . .maybe you should write him back and suggest he seek reparative therapy for his unwanted homophobic opinions. And then do everything you can to vote him OUT of office.

6. Well, there WILL be a slippery slope...
If we start giving same sex couple some rights, like being able to visit their partners in the hospital, etc, what will happen?

1) The sky will remain right where it is.
2) Earthquakes will hit at exactly the same rate as they are now.
3) The earth will, admittedly, get hotter, but the Right won't admit that.
4) The next step will be not quite so scary to the huge plurality of Americans who are homophobic, but not outright gay bashers.
