I read it, but there is more heat than light there. I could not think of one single thing to say that would not mortify someone.

I'm not afraid of being flamed, but as a Quaker I am supposed to act in kindness and not deliberately inflict hurt on another. That's harder than it sounds sometimes.

For the record I think that Gays should have the same civil rights and the same protections as anyone else. No foot dragging, no relativism, just equality and first class citizenship. Don't sit down and shut up. Speak out until you are fully franchised. That is a good thing to do. Quakers do believe in spirited debate up to and including peaceful civil disobedience. We know that everyone is equal no matter what this culture says. Our differences enhance our humanity they do not diminish it.

Why would gays go nuclear? Is this a joke related to the concept of the nuclear family? Or is it related to nuclear weapons? Is it a joke at all?

And who did go nuclear? Merkel? For serving beer? Or for leading a nation that allows same-sex mariages?

By the way, it may not be that bad an idea if Mr Obama sits down and has a beer with Mr Choi. Even if no immediate results are achieved, the image of the commander-in-chief and Mr Choi could well promote the acceptance of gay and lesbian people in the military.
