GLSEN Spins on "That's So Gay" Catchphrase
Look out for adverts mocking the infamous phrase "that's so gay" by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). This outreach is being coordinated by their 'Think Before You Speak' campaign and has released several billboards, print ads, TV, radio, and internet graphics throughout the country in an effort to get students to stop using language that is hurtful towards LGBT students. The campaign seeks to make the phrase look outdated, meaningless, and ignorant.

Below are some of the new posters that have been released featuring a jock, cheerleader, and a gamer that attempt to make the point.

Sign the pledge and come up with something original to replace "that's so gay" with something that actually makes sense! http://www.thinkb4youspeak.com/SignThePledge/

I signed the pledge, and submitted an idea I'd had a while back...

7. Instead of "totally gay" how about "totally Trey?" Or "That's so Bushed-up" or "Totally Bushy." n/t

2. Instead of calling people gay, they should call them "Trey."
Sun Feb-03-08 08:22 PM

As in Trey Parker, one of the creators of South Park.

Even fans of the show have to admit, they WAY over-use the word "gay" in the way you describe kids doing it.

So, from now on, if someone or something is lame, sucky, stupid or unpleasant, it's "Totally Trey."

Trey Parker's real name is Randolph Severn Parker III. That name is completely Trey.

3. I watched "GLEE" on TV the other night, it's a musical/dance comedy of a high school teacher dealing
with his students who are trying to bring back musical theater to their school like when he was a little younger and dealing with all the insanity of high school.

when they finished dancing to some disco song, the girls/guys of the group said it was a horrible song, but then the clearly feminine boy blurted out in disgust - "that song is so Gay!"

well, I won't be watching THAT show anymore....

5. I've been equally offensive so I've never cared.

Plus, being offensive to people and then being callous about it is so . . . breeder.

I actually had a stupid queen at a gay bar yesterday attempt to dress me down for saying "that's so gay", when I was actually making fun of people who say it.

He lost me at oh hell no.

Same thing - if we can't tell the difference ourselves between mocking it and saying it, then I promise you there are much worthier causes to twist our panties over.

South Park: makin' fun of the losers who say it. But god knows we need to have an enemy. but deep fried jesus christ on a stick are we really this stupid?

6. I'd take it in exactly the opposite direction.
1. show The Pieta; voiceover: "that's so gay."

2. Tschaikovsy segment; voiceover: "that's so gay". etc. etc. etc.

GLSEN's well intentioned but the message is a bit muddled. And somewhat defensive in tone. I'd take the phrase and roll with it.

People might actually learn something from it.

7. thank you
this has always seemed like an adopted cause - well intentioned but off target, and really not all that significant as causes d'etre go.

I guess if that's the one that brung ya - it's just not my date for this dance.

I'd rather own the phrase.
