Gay bar has new ID rule for cross-dressers
Gay bar has new ID rule for cross-dressers

(Elk Grove Village, Ill.) A gay bar in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village says cross-dressers who wish to drink there will now have to show a valid photo ID that matches the gender they are dressed as.

Manager Peter Lansdorf says Hunters Nightclub reluctantly imposed its new ID requirement because cross-dressing prostitutes were advertising on Craigslist and mentioning his tavern as a place they hung out.

Lansdorf concedes that the new rule could cut into the club’s substantial transvestite clientele, but says prostitution of any form could cost him his liquor license.

Spokesman Ed Yohnka of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois says the new ID requirement may possibly be a violation of the Illinois Human Rights Act.

Great spot to party.

3. this does not seem to address the problem at all
and, in addition, who would have ID as the gender they were cross-dressing AS?

this makes no sense.

IMHO

5. They are a private business
As such, they should be allowed to do whatever they want. If people disagree with it, boycott it and they will change their policy or go out of business.

10. non sequitor response
whether they have the right to do something has no bearing on what I said.

22. while they may have a legal right, it is still bigoted
i can have a "no XYZ allowed in my home", and there is nothing anyone can do about it, but i am still a bigot

26. I'm not sure they even have a legal right to ask for this....
I can't say for certain that if I went down to the DMV in drag and told the clerk that I was a drag queen and I needed an ID for my female look, IN ADDITION TO my "normal" mode of dress, that they would comply. After all, maybe in drag I might look JUST Like my 16 year old sister, who could then use my female ID as a fake ID.

27. Whatever they want, within reason....
I'm not certain that what they're asking for is even possible. The DMV won't let me wear a hat when they take my driver's license picture. I don't much expect that a wig and a set of huge falsies would pass muster, either.

4. What clientele do transvestite prostitutes have?
I don't understand who would be interested - of course if they are keeping their gender secret in an effort to fool unsuspecting customers, that's just plain old dishonesty...

I just never have understood the cross-dressing thing, if I wanted a woman I'd find a real one. My partner (of 29 years) and I think they're off-putting.

editing, anyway isn't prostitution the issue and not just cross dressing?

8. Dress and orientation don't necessarily match
Many women are turned off by Cross-Dressing guys. Yet the distribution of Gay/Straight is the same among MtF Cross-Dressers as the public at large.

And then many Transgenders are thrown out of work for daring to transgress the gender binary. Finding the only work available to be prostitution. As for their clientele. Among online Porn anyway the Transgender or Ladyboy seems to be well represented. Why? Does it matter? Seems like a personal choice to me. Like preferring Blonds or Redheads.

12. Well, I've known both gay and straight transvestites (I'm 67 and seen pretty much everything)
But this discussion is about prostitution, isn't it? I don't blame that club or bar or whatever it is for protecting its license. My original question was just curiosity because I (still) can't figure out just who is supposed to be a willing customer of a prostitute dressed as someone of the other gender. I just have to repeat, as a gay man, I just have no interest in connecting with other men who look like women. You are right, it is personal preference (and privilege too) I say.

30. It matters from a study aspect, but not really from any other.
The whole "chick with a dick" thing is fascinating when the guys who are looking for that and in those terms identify as straight. But then they are seeking a person with a penis who identifies as female, so yeah, it's kind of interesting. It only matters in the same sense that it matters if Pluto is a planet or a giant hunk of ice.

11. Thanks a lot. If I could restart my life, I'd pick straight...it would have been a hell of a lot
easier. But I didn't have any choice and I can't help not understanding. I despise okra too, that will probably make a pariah to some vegetarians.

23. They would have plenty of clientele....
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 10:13 AM by SacredCow
I did a charity drag show some time back and was approached by a long time drag queen who was impressed by my appearance and performance. He informed me that I needed to make a trip to another bar, where (as he put it) "there are just TONS of boys who like to be fucked by beautiful drag queens." I thanked him kindly for the complement(?) and declined.

I'm sorry, but in my expeirence cross-dressers, drag queens, transvestites or whatever you want to call them- dressing up to keep their gender secret to fool unsuspecting customers is VERY seldom the intent.

" Seeking a t-gurl, to fuck me, passable not necessary, must be hung greater than 7in and a top. No men."

Seriously. That's the kind of stuff you find on Craigslist. Up the list from that you'll find the "straight man" looking to be topped his "first time (this ad hasn't changed in years)" in the M4M section.

29. Many gay bars used to have no-drag policies.
Badlands in SF used to have a no-drag policy (on regular nights), as did the Lost and Found and the Pier in DC.

Years ago, the nice bars didn't allow tennis shoes, t-shirts, or jeans.

15. Sounds wrong
It sounds like a back door prohibition. If the cops come in you must have correct ID, not one to match your dress.

25. It seems to go against the point of an ID....
It identifies *you*- not how you are dressed.

I have off and on facial hair, so should I have to get 2 ID's depending on my facial hair status?

16. What a crock!
Lansford's ridiculous excuse for locking out crossdressers is nothing more than bigotry wrapped in bullshit. He's playing the victim to mask an exclusionary agenda. His license is in no jeopardy unless he engages in pimping or prostitution himself or knowingly or openly condones it. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that Hunters has more than its share of non-crossdressing prostitutes, just like any other bar anywhere. The man's a liar and a hypocrite.

19. How about this rule....license match the nasty bits.
Cops come in...hold up your license and lift your skirt and yell...

"Boy parts here!!"

Turn and give a little waggle. Then show them your girls.

24. Seems like a over-reaching way to handle a problem....
Unless people are turning tricks in the establishment, I am not really sure how he'd lose his liquor license. If he kicks out and/or calls the police on people who are soliciting play for pay in any form, there really is no problem.

I guess there won't be any drag shows there.
