Did anyone catch that new show "Modern family"
Just wondering if anyone here saw that new comedy "Modern Family" on ABC.

Its kind of like a fake documentary of a modern American family, which is in turn divided into three different parts of this family (a more traditional family w/ husband, wife & kids. another with a man (played by Ed O'Neil), possibly a widower, married to a Hispanic wife & and their child, and finally a gay male couple who have just adopted a baby from Vietnam)

I thought the gay couple were very good and very funny as well, and not in an overly stereotypical way that seems to prevail on television. Of course, I guess it pretty much breaks the stereotypical barrier, considering I can't recall any other show on network television that features a gay couple as a central part of the show. The rest of the show was alright, not the greatest, but I am glad to see Ed O'Neil back on tv.

So, again, I was just wondering if anyone caught the show and had any opinions about it?

1. I had read a review posted a few weeks ago that had the opposite take
The reviewer was really pissed at the stereotyping of the gay couple.

I was going to watch anyway. Glad to hear you found the portrayal to be okay.

I'm a huge Ed O'Neil fan so I'm definitely going to watch.l

4. Yes, I thought it was okay
plus keep in mind it is supposed to be a comedy, so the couple like the rest of the family are supposed to be humorous. The one in the beard is supposed to be the more down to Earth kind of guy while his partner is more flamboyant and kind of the comic relief of the two.

This is a nice leap for network tv, not that I really watch it anymore. It would be nice if some day soon they have a show with a gay couple(s) that isn't a comedy.

2. I saw a promo - looked good, but it's now obvious Ed O'Neill is typecast.
(plays a dysfunctional father, I suspect...)

I recall a performance of his in a remake of, what was it, "Dragnet", on NBC... he's a very good actor, but Bundy did typecast him in the minds of many. (I used to think typecasting was a myth, but having clandestinely chatted with people, they do develop mindsets that are difficult to shake off.)

do typecast him. He really is a great actor, and I thought his roles as a cop in Dragnet and his other short lived show, Big Apple, were pretty good. He seems to prefer such roles, but always ends up typecasted as the dysfunctional dad.

3. It's on the DVR for when I get off work.
I wasn't really an Ed O'Neill fan until John from Cincinnati. He should have gotten an Emmy for that one.

6. It was pretty standard fare, imo
Not that funny, but a couple of chuckles.

The gay couple I had mixed feelings about; the more flamboyant stereotypical guy was a bit over the top, but I don't expect much more from network TV most of the time. I may give it another shot, but... meh.

7. Best/Funniest line of the show???????
Upon being told that the newest addition to the family, an adopted Asian baby girl named Lily, the son-in-law asked, "But will she be able to pronounce her name?"

It took me a couple of seconds to get the joke but I

9. Modern Family = Hilarious!!!
What...did everybody get a Funny-Bone-ectomy here??

Comments placed even without watching a show shouldn't happen.

This is a great show, loaded with witty humor and very relate-able characters.

I taped the Pilot episode and wound up watching it 4x, and laughed out loud every time I watched it from being packed with content. I have not done that since I watched Caddyshack. The second episode was excellent as well.

Ed O'Neil is NOT stereotyped here at all. He plays the patriarch of the family and does it very well indeed. A little brash at times, but brings things together for the fans.

Those who take offense to a character or a joke....its just a joke, loosen up and laugh a little.

Well written, great actors, it is just fun!!!

Exactly what I need in the middle of my week. Thank You ABC!!!
