Measure submitted to dump Calif. gay marriage ban - Some say it's too soon
Measure submitted to dump Calif. gay marriage ban

(San Francisco) A group pushed ahead Thursday with a campaign to repeal California’s same-sex marriage ban, even though some other gay rights organizations think it’s too soon for another expensive ballot fight.

Los Angeles-based Love Honor Cherish proposed ballot language to strike the ban approved by state voters in November as Proposition 8.

The new ballot proposal says religious institutions would not be required to perform same-sex unions if it conflicts with their beliefs.

“The refusal to perform a marriage under this provision shall not be the basis for lawsuit or liability, and shall not affect the tax-exempt status of any religious denomination, church or other religious institution,” reads the exemption, an attempt by Love Honor Cherish to defuse one of the arguments Proposition 8 sponsors used to garner support last fall.

2. Agree - if the MJ is on the ballot marriage equality stands a great chance
there will be a lot of young voters coming out to vote on pot - it will pull in the voters we need IMO.

4. Don't like this idea,
“The refusal to perform a marriage under this provision shall not be the basis for lawsuit or liability"
Does that mean that a judge can refuse to marry same sex couples?

5. It seems as though...
It specifically refers to the poor, put-upon religious groups.

6. I know...we have discriminated against them for so long!
Wasn't it the Christians Abe was trying to free during the Civil War? Wasn't it Christian bars that were ebing raided that started Stonewall?

9. It's Always Too Soon For Some People.
The momentum is currently ours. We should not let up in the slightest, locally or nationally.

10. If Not Now, Then WHEN?!
It seems to me that there will never be a right time for this. If we don't take the initiatives, the straights by and large won't either.
