Orthodox rabbis take public anti-gay marriage stance in NJ
Orthodox rabbis take public anti-gay marriage stance in NJ

(Lakewood, NJ) The leaders in the local large Orthodox Jewish community go to great lengths to keep out the outside world, discouraging nonbusiness use of the Internet and encouraging strict filters to keep the ungodly out when members must use the Web.

But last month, several rabbis and other elders did something astounding for them: They took a public stand on a political issue, declaring their opposition to same-sex marriage in the state.

“This really hurts us,” said Rabbi Osher Lieberman, a key figure in the community in the suburbs about 30 miles east of Trenton. “To say (it’s) immoral is not enough.”

He said community members are being encouraged to do whatever they can to make sure lawmakers don’t vote to recognize gay marriage.

4. They and their religion / beliefs must be very fragile if people are married they
will likely never encounter in their lives are so threating to them. They sound like a pack of obsolete dinosaurs IMO. Why do these people always have to try to burden others with their beliefs. It always amazes how those so persecuted in life take opportunities to reach out and persecute others they don't even know or will likely never encounter. Yet, we are to feel so sorry for them and constantly reminded so...

7. The Orthodox don't usually impose their religious views on the outside world.
The fact that some of them feel that THIS justifies breaking-down that wall speaks very loudly of their prejudices.

I've confronted this type before, and they're really ugly people.

The only people who have ever come right-out and told me that they think gay people should be killed were a couple Orthodox scumbags in Brookline, Mass.

8. Frightful type of people. Yet probably want and demand all of their rights. Yet
they are made of the same material those that persecuted them were, but yet they fail to see it in themselves. What a psychological twist in their minds.

9. Yep. How could it be otherwise? All religions are based on fears and lies.
The Rabbis' stance is pretty evil when you think about it. Advocating the denial of basic human rights to a whole class of people because their fucking fantasies tell them that they KNOW what's right for the world?

It's time the world abandoned these Bronze-Age constructs, embraced what it means to be human and got about the business of evolving as a species.

“With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil — but for good people to do evil — that takes religion.” - Steven Weinberg

God, I hate religion.

15. Same here, "God, I hate religion." I often think religion is about the most
diabolical aspect of a supposed civilized society. The misery individuals and groups have suffered at the hands of the godly religious is just so damn phenomenal. If one tells me they are religious, that's an immediate check point in my mind to be leary of the person. I don't trust religious people as many do not play with a full deck.

19. These are especially closed minded and offensive to America and Americans.
The goal of these people is to create and insular and closed society like they had in Lithuania, and to shut out all American influences. Which of course, inspires me to invite them to return to Lithuania if they liked it so much.

Unlike the Catholic "Church" and other fundie chrisTian denominations, you don't usually see Orthodox Jews trying to ban things they don't like.

You can drive your cars on Saturdays.

You can buy all the pork and lobster you can afford.

You can even buy clothes that blend two types of fabric and put cheese on a hamburger.

I have yet to hear of Orthodox Jews trying to start a ballot initiative to ban these things in California.

They'll ruthlessly enforce some of their draconian laws within their own community, much as The Amish do, but (also like The Amish) they don't try to inflict the laws of their angry sky god upon the rest of us.

They're doing this because they're boot-licking bullies.

They think that by siding with the far-right chrisTian power structure in America-- by having a common enemy with them-- that the fundies will cool their jets on some of their anti-semitism.

"Hey, Bubba Joe, leave the Hebrews out of it-- they hate the fags as much as we do! Let's find a homo's lawn to burn a cross on this week instead."

Boot-licking bullies.
