5. The state senate is a pure clusterfuck. |
|
It's gerrymandered in the favor of Republicans, so it's split 32/30 in the Dems favor, and 8 Dems crossed the line to vote with the Repubs. We've got a bunch of dirty Dems there, including one of the no votes who was recently on trial for slashing his girlfriend in the face with a broken glass.

Target every dem who voted against it. I hate the Republicans, but maybe the Dems need a purity test of there own to get funding. There should be some core issues that every Democrat should stand for, and marriage equality, a woman's right to choose, and universal health care should be three at the top.

7. Discrimination is alive and well in the United States of America. |
|
All are not created equal.
All do not have equal rights.
Equality does not exist. It is a lie.
NEXT: Outlaw divorce. Seriously. If marriage is truly so sacred that others must be discriminated against to protect it, there should be NO PROVISION WHATSOEVER to get out of it! One man, one woman...FOREVER. Even if she gets fat, he goes bald and passes gas all the time, and they can't stand each other. It's forever. One chance is all you get, and you're stuck.
I wonder what that would do to the marriage rate in this country? :shrug:

This absolutely breaks my heart. I was really hoping that the NY Senate would do the right thing today. I can't believe eight Democrats voted "No" on the bill.

16. It depends on who you ask. |
|
I know some people who are closer to the inside of the state senate who expected it to go the other direction, winning with a few lost Dems and a few Republican yes votes. Personally I have had the feeling for awhile that they were being way too optimistic--with the current makeup of the State Senate being what it is, passing this is almost impossible. You've got Republicans mostly from upstate conservative districts, and you've got too many Democrats who are either corrupt (Diaz, Monserrate, and Kruger) or else catering to demographics within their districts (Stachowski, Aubertine).

This is unacceptable from the Democratic Party in a deeply blue state. Yes, I know, upstate conservatives and all that. It shouldn't matter. The party our community pours so much into should not be making the difference in our continued second class citizenship.

* Darrel Aubertine (D) — NO
* Ruben Diaz (D) — NO

Not that I imagine such a boycott would get very far, but Pri used the right word: silly.
That said, turning over eight New York State Senators is a much more realistic goal.

|
Edited on Wed Dec-02-09 04:06 PM by racaulk
Sorry, but I can't support you on that.
If anything, New York needs our support more than ever, we just need to be careful as to where we spend our limited resources. Research and support those causes, companies, and organizations in NY that are owned and/or are supportive of our communities, including those that work to effect change in the state and local governments there.
And we absolutely need to fund and support any primary challengers to the Democrats that voted "No" on this measure today.
No state has full equality for its GLBT citizens, not even your state of New Jersey. I hope you don't propose boycotting all of them.
Edited to add: Please remember also that the NYS General Assembly approved this bill more than once by large margins. The Senate there is just a clusterfuck.

|
then, yes, I will call for a boycott and make plans to move. I'm no longer willing to live in an area or state that is openly hostile to me.
Maybe I can get a million other gays to move to Wyoming with me to create the first majority-gay state. Then we can ban straight marriage there and see how they like it.

They live in all fifty states.
I can certainly understand and respect your desire to surround yourself with other gay and gay affirming people, it's just not the approach I choose to take. I'm not saying that one approach is better than the other, they're just different. If marriage equality doesn't shake out in New Jersey this year, I hope you'll stay and continue the fight, especially since you're so close to achieving that goal (your incoming Governor notwithstanding). Here in Georgia, we have a MUCH larger fight ahead of us in a much more hostile political landscape, so I don't envy the position you're in there.
But if you decide to move out to Wyoming, I will be very jealous. That area of the country is breathtakingly beautiful! :hi:

Chris Christie wants to do away with the civil unions we have, and will be pushing a state Constitutional Amendment to permanently ban gay marriage and civil unions. He has enough Democrats (like Albano, Milam, and Van Drew to name just three) behind him to put it on the ballot, and by this time in 2010 my civil union will be forcibly dissolved.
Now the time has come to make a stand, and for gays to pull together and fight together.

say what you will about him, he deserves credit for his work for gays. with the stroke of a pen he put us ahead by ensuring that all marriages obtained elsewhere, say in neighboring Canada or Massachusetts or Vermont or Connecticut or New Hampshire, are fully recognized under NY law. the court upheld this earlier this year. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/19/new-york-must-recognize-g_n_364212.htmlthe fight goes on.

31. I didn't think we had the votes, but to lose this badly is shocking |
|
My guess is that several of the no votes would have voted yes if they knew the bill would pass, but decided it wasn't worth the heat they'd take for their vote if it would fail anyway. That seems the most logical explanation for how not so close the margin was.
