2. Okay, well he didn't necessarily say it would be EASY. But this push was his idea.

New York governor to propose legalizing same-sex marriage

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Gov. David Paterson will announce plans Thursday to introduce same-sex marriage legislation in the state Assembly, according to an assemblyman who was asked to be present for the announcement.

"The governor's office called me and asked if I would stand with the governor," said Micah Z. Kellner, a state assemblyman from Manhattan. "I said I will be thrilled to stand with the governor when he makes this announcement."

<snip>

Because of its previous success in the Assembly, the bill is expected to pass there, but it will need 32 votes to pass in the state Senate.

"We hope to have this bill passed at the end of June, at the end of the legislative session," said Kellner. "No one wants to bring this to the floor to fail, it would be a huge disaster. We want to make sure that if we bring this to the floor for a vote that it passes."

So, we did do the nose.

And the hat.

3. I think people would want to know who is and who isn't in favor
now we do so we know who to primary. I would have preferred to win, obviously, but knowing who is and who isn't in favor is also helpful.

24. He said it early in the year, before the Repuke coup...
...the political landscape was different...other states were approving it...then Maine, then the DNC ignoring Maine...momentum had shifted.

6. You're right. Especially with all the support President Obama threw behind this.

Oh, wait...

Plenty of blame to go around.

9. I somehow knew they would defeat it. From day one.
They can't do any of the people's business, but they sure had time to stop Teh Gay from spreading. Fuck you "liberal" NY. I'm ashamed to live here.

10. I was very surprised. I thought it would pass.
It was terribly disappointing, esp. on top of the war news. I really though NY would pull it off. What is it about civil rights that our state senators don't understand?

12. Well he's a man who stood up for equality

To be clear, what he did was much better than smugly proclaiming some religious excuse to promote discrimination, standing side by side with venom spouting hate preachers who call for acts of war against their neighbors, like some people we all know.

14. New York is closer to marriage equality than it ever has been.
New York now recognizes same-sex marriages performed out-of-state, and the General Assembly did pass the current bill by significant majorities. Marriage equality in New York is now in our sight and will be a reality sooner than later, IMHO. Gov. Patterson's leadership has gone a great way in getting us this far, and he pursued this change in the law because he knew it was the right thing to do, his personal political future be damned.

I sure wish another chief executive that I could mention had the courage to do the same.

22. Honestly,
I dearly appreciate Governor Patterson's support of Same Sex Marriage and I will always be thankful of him for that. That being said, however, I still think he is doing a pretty lousy job as Gov with the rest of state matters. I got nothing against the guy personally, I just hope the Dems run someone else for governor.
