My thoughts on the speeches today.
As the fake strife between gays and African American's wage on at DU about how one can or cannot equate two oppressed minorities, by FAR the best speeches in favor of equality came from African American & Jewish Senators in NY State.

Yes, we lost but those speeches will always stay with me.

Some quotes from African American Senators today:

Sen. Eric Adams, "All of these states, at one time or another, sold blacks into slavery and participated in legal slavery because a numerical majority" which supported slavery at the time. "But a numerical majority in one place does not mean they are in the right place. We must lead the country to the right place." Also, The same comments being made against same-sex marriage were the same comments my grandmother received in Alabama when she wanted to marry my grandfather,"

Sen. Velmanette Montgomery, "In my family and culture, especially as it relates to my religion, it has always been considered that, if you were living together and not officially married, you were considered living in sin. So, for those of us who believe in that religious tenet, the reason why to support same-sex marriage is that we do not want them to live in sin."

I cant find the quotes by Malcolm Smith but they were powerful too...

Sen. Bill Perkins, an African-American Democrat from Harlem, "... I can see Dr. Martin Luther King smiling down on us today - recognizing that his sacrifice was not in vain."

Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson, spoke of her estranged gay brother

Liz Krueger & Oppenheimer were very moving as well

All in all, Yes, we lost but some of the democratic senators did make me proud of the democratic party but particularly, Krueger, Montgomery and Adams brought me to tears.

3. Perhaps we will turn a corner in the scapegoating game.
And instead cultivate alliances and marshal our forces to push for equal representation, access and rights in the law. The right wing started in the 1980's by getting control of the local school boards and built their power from there. We should work to get local LGBT and LGBT friends elected and support those already in office.

Either that or we should all just move to CA and say be done with it.
