Same sex marriage is legal in 5 states.
How long before people start to marry their pets? When will we see men and box turtles sharing their love openly without shame? When will traditional marriage fall by the wayside?

I want to know how long we have to wait for these prophecies to become reality.

2. Well, I hear that a Catholic married a Presbyterian in Iowa.
Does that count? So far, though, no Lutherans marrying Baptists. That's really beyond the pale.

3. Uh oh. That Catholic is going to burn in hell now.
Do we really have to let them in?

4. Santorum must be very depressed that no "Man on Dog" love has emerged
from the cornfields of Iowa.

What's up with the girl and the "coordinated" doll? How sick is THAT?

15. I'm guessing it's an American Girl doll.
Pretty sure it's this one, based on the hair. http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/static/kitdoll.jsf/title/Kit+%26+Ruthie/saleGroupId/300/uniqueId/59/nodeId/11/webMenuId/5/LeftMenu/TRUE

They're spendy and there's quite the cottage industry in making matching clothes for the doll and girl (or selling patterns for relatives who know how to sew to do- I'm going to go out on a limb and guess this is one of those because I like to think a professional wouldn't use that fabric in a non-pajama application.) For some reason conservative homeschoolers tended to be pretty fond of them- I'm guessing because of the "wholesome values" thing and because they do get a little history into a kid in a painless way- there are books to go with each doll and each one represents a different subculture and time period in American history. Within the past few years they've fallen out of favor with the fundie set because the books are sorta feminist and the parent company is apparently outspokenly so. I'm pretty sure some fundie website played Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon and connected them to some charity to some other charity and from there to Planned Parenthood as well, and of course that's the kiss of death in that crowd.

The girl in question looks a bit old to be carrying a doll around (though about the prime age for the dolls in question- they're really more for collecting and accessorizing a la Barbie than getting down on the floor and playing with) and sobbing in public, but if the doll is a special favorite of hers wearing the matching outfit and carrying it on a day where there would be a lot of family stress and probably not a lot of attention doesn't really seem all that odd, other than being a touch infantile for her age.

That said, my main concern is that Santorum felt the need to drag his crying kids out in public for some reason. Politics completely aside, when those kids get older and realize that could have been avoided I'm betting one of them will punch him in the snoot for it. My money's on the kid who looks like a chubbier, startled Harry Potter.

6. Whenever I hear these "slippery slope" arguments I just want to shake someone.

"How long before people start to marry their pets?"

I'm sure this will happen as soon as pets have the mental capacity and wherewithal to enter into legal contracts with the state. Until that time comes, I don't think we need to worry.

"When will we see men and box turtles sharing their love openly without shame?

This question might be better posed to Senator Cornyn. I'm sure he would love to share his ideas on the matter.

"When will traditional marriage fall by the wayside?

Ummm...it already has, and not because of teh gayz. Polygamy has been outlawed in the United States for many years, men are no longer legally allowed in most states to take 12-year-old slaves as wives, and it is rare nowadays for a woman to be a virgin on her wedding day. And none of that happened because two dudes wanted to marry one another.

Oh, you mean "one man and one woman?" Well, divorce rates hover around the 50% mark in our country, and guess where divorce rates are lowest? In Massachusetts. That's right, Massachusetts. The epicenter of the marriage equality fight. It appears that gay marriage actually helps to save "traditional" marriage.

:banghead:

I know you're just trying to be funny and I believe the tone of your OP was supposed to be light, but these "arguments" are rooted in ignorance, bigotry, and fear...not to mention that it's fucking infuriating to have to constantly counter them.

Edited for clarity.

7. one of my straight employees told me
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 04:03 PM by sui generis
that he loves turtles and if he could he'd marry his box turtle for sure. :P

that's a true f'rill-rill story - and he may even be serious! Not that I care what HE does with his life. I do believe the box turtle would have difficulty applying for social security widowhood in the event of my boy's untimely demise, but I really don't care about that either.

The fact is whether he marries his box turtle or has it stuffed and put on the mantle is irrelevant - he's an adult, and he should be allowed to make whatever decisions he wants, provided the box turtle agrees.

So, it's only by sacrificing gay marriage that we are able to keep straight dudes from marrying their box turtles - now that's some impressive logic.

And. . . . FUCK TRADITION goddammit. We make our own - don't need to borrow anyone else's, nor have anyone else's FORCED upon us.

8. I hear tell a woman married a dolphin in Israel
But same-sex marriage isn't legal there so it couldn't be Teh Gays that caused her to do that.

14. I am waiting for the gay marriage to be legal everywhere. Then my baby girl
(a gorgeous chocolate lab) and I are going to the courthouse to demand a marriage license. I presume since she is a girl and I am a boy it should be okay.
