Pro-choice to abort gays?
(Ramblings from ex-male prostitute/ex-"journalist" Jeff Gannon ... this time on gays and abortion) :eyes:

Isolation of a “gay gene” might cause a seismic shift in support for abortion among gay people. At present, gay men and lesbians line up strongly behind a woman’s right to an abortion, albeit under a less sinister banner of “freedom of choice.”

How might that position change if parents were able to decide to terminate a pregnancy because of the presence of a genetic predisposition to homosexual behavior?

It would be folly to think that most prospective parents would be willing to bring a pregnancy to term knowing the child would be born gay. The issue is far less prickly for those opposed to abortion and homosexuality, since the identification of a gay gene would probably be quickly followed by a therapy to eradicate it as if it were a genetic defect.

<snip>

EARLIER THIS YEAR, Maine state Rep. Brian Duprey proposed a law that would prohibit termination of a pregnancy based on the sexual orientation of a fetus. Other lawmakers viewed it as a disingenuous attempt to force them to choose between supporting gay rights and abortion rights, since the bill’s Republican author supports neither.

I could give a rat's ass if he was writing about the best way to arrange tulips

this guy has already sold out the GLBT community for his 30 pieces of silver when he was a plant in the White House press pool

so glad I don't live in Washington--I'd be arrested for burning copies of the Blade in Dupont Circle

4. I agree!

I've noticed in their letters that that Blade has been getting some really negative letters from readers about Gannon being carried in the Blade.

Also, I haven't notice other Blade publications picking up his columns (unless he has an exclusive agreement with the Washington Blade).

I'm all for promoting a diversity of opinion and support gay publications who include LEGITIMATE Republican/conservative viewpoints. However, I consider Gannon anything but "legitimate" ... in all senses of the word!

(On edit: Whoops! I spoke too soon! I just found the same piece in Atlanta's The Southern Voice.)

5. Oh, listen everyone! Jeff ("Call Me") Gannon's talking!
It's got to be important! Why, he used to be in the White House, interviewing our President! That means something, doesn't it? And look how honest he's being about his feelings. See?

7. Gannon is a sleaze
but that doesn't make his point here, incorrect. If a gay gene is discovered, gays will be aborted in droves.

8. If you support CHOICE...
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:19 PM by Boomer
then you can't sit around and grouse because you don't like the choice someone made.

The whole rationale of pro-choice is that terminating a pregancy is a woman's personal business, not the government's or her neighbor's. So it's none of my business whether the woman down the block chooses to have an abortion because she can't afford a child, was raped, doesn't want a child, or doesn't want a GAY child.

I may not like the fact that she will abort a fetus with a gay gene, but then someone else down the block would probably prefer she not abort at all. Tough. None of our business.

11. I think that something else might happen
Maybe anti Choice people will begin to "soften" their own views on abortion, and grant themselves generous exceptions. After all what is more compatible than hypocrisy and the religious right?

16. Oh, but didn't you see Jeffy's high jump over that issue?
See, conservatives won't have any moral issues with this because gene therapy will just take care of the "gay gene" so they won't have to abort. Talk about wishful thinking.

And is Jeff Gannon the most self-hating homosexual you've ever run into? Sheesh!

12. Fundamentalists would never admit there is a "gay gene" in the first place
That would admit that God created us.

Exactly! Which, btw, was the religious argument put forth by . . . The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. in his fight for black civil rights. Thus, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of the mid-1960s to enforce the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments.

When sexual orientation is scientifically determined to be genetic (that is, an immutable characteristic) then it will surely follow in law that it is unconstitutional to discriminate against homosexuals, period. There's no "wiggle room" if it comes to that in science. However, where the "wiggle room" may lie is in the legal standard of review as applied by the courts in determining discrimination against homosexuals.

13. Gannon is a day late and a dollar short.
I already brought this up on these boards months (almost a year?) ago. The majority of people who posted agreed that they wouldn't support abortions based around the fact that their child would be born gay.

The only solution anyone could think up to be both pro-choice and anti-genocide (Hitler style) would be to not allow parents to test their children to see if they are gay or straight. Or to allow testing, but disallow abortion to those who had the test and have a gay child.
