Marriage equality approved in nation’s captital
Same-sex couples won the right to marry in the nation’s capital Tuesday when the District of Columbia City Council voted 11-2 to pass a measure sponsored by openly gay council member David Catania. Congress has 30 days to review the law before it takes effect, but Congressional leaders have already agreed not to block the law’s adoption.

Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund, congratulated Catania on the victory: ”There are many people to thank today, but this community owes a special debt of gratitude to Councilman Catania. He has served the city with distinction for years, and he has never hidden who he is. Openly LGBT elected officials are doing tremendous things all across America, and today’s vote in D.C. is another testament to their effectiveness as leaders in the fight for true equality.”

1. Another win. May the trend continue until critical mass is
reached and the SCOTUS has to act.

8. pretty hard to undo this one, mitch
Takes a joint resolution of Congress and it would have to be signed by Obama in order for it to be overturned.

Should that all occur, there wouldn't be very many gay Democrats left in this nation.

5. Nice!
Although it is likely to get ugly before it is finally put into effect, the District seems intent, and I believe the public supports this.

6. Damn, this could cause my native state of MA to lose fabulousness.
It's bad enough we have to compete with Iowa!

Seriously, one more step in the right direction.

11. I'll hold off celebrating for 30 days, since I'm pessimistic these days about congress
Usually I'd think gay marriage wouldn't stand a chance of being overturned in DC by congress, but after how many so called 'pro-choice' democrats voted for the Stupack amendment in the house I'd rather take a wait and see attitude on this, especially since the bigots will probably try to raise a big enough fuss in the media to get gay marriage overturned in DC.
