Even Superhero's are not immune - Batwoman loses to DADT
Withers: Batwoman loses to DADT
James Withers
By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 12.15.2009 9:27am EST

Comic book super hero Batwoman (a/k/a Kathy Kane) loves the ladies. You knew that right? Well she faced a foe in her past that could not be vanquished: DADT.

In a story line that mimics the experience of many gay and lesbian military personnel, Kane’s background is shared. She was at the top of her class at the United States Military Academy, when her sexuality was discovered. Everyone realized Kane had the making of a good soldier and would have been asset to the military. She is counseled by her superiors to deny the allegations so she can continue to serve; however, she reminded everyone about the academy’s code: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor suffer other to do so.”

“Although Batwoman is a fictional character, her story rings true for so many women who have been discharged under DADT,” noted the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network’s blog. “Pentagon statistics continue to show the disproportionate impact of DADT on women.”

I was behind the curve on Batwoman’s personal life (she came out in 2006), but there is something about a comic book getting to the heart of the problem when it comes to DADT. The policy forces our soldiers to lie to their peers and those in charge and it rids the military of good soldiers and sailors.

Maybe we can send the White House a few copies of this edition?

1. That would be a waste. They don't bother asking about the health and welfare of gay military
personnel.

They just tell them to STFU.

3. Ever since the X-Men, comics have been big on portraying civil rights struggles.

(above picture is Apollo and the Midnighter from Wildstorm Comics.)

4. Wonderful! The arts do matter.
I haven't followed comics since I was a kid, but I don't consider them trivial.

Sure wish I had all my old DC's and Disneys. My retirement would be taken care of..... ;->
