Help to preserve marriage equality in Washington, DC!

Marriage equality took a big step forward recently, as our nation's capital became the latest jurisdiction to legalize same-sex marriage. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the legislation in an emotional ceremony, one in which he discussed the discrimination his own parents -- an interracial couple -- had faced in the 1960's. It was great news for supporters of marriage equality -- and supporters of equality, period.

Unfortunately, some members of Congress are trying to veto it. In a slap at equality, and a slap at DC's right to self-rule, arch-conservatives are plotting ways to end marriage equality in DC before it even begins.

Specifically, Congress has 30 days to vote to overturn DC's law. And Representative Jason Chaffetz of Utah, the top Republican on the committee overseeing DC, has indicated he's going to try his best to do so:

"... even if a resolution of disapproval is not enacted, members of Congress can try to attach an anti-gay marriage rider to another piece of legislation. (Chaffetz) is considering a variety of legislative methods for blocking gay marriage there, including the appropriations process."

Number 1, overturning the new law would be wrong. And number 2 -- what the heck is a Congressman from Utah doing sticking his nose into DC's business?

Send a letter to Congress TODAY. Don't let Congress veto equality. Tell Representative Chaffetz to stay the heck out of DC's business, and tell your members to vote for equality, not for discrimination.

Time is short -- the 30-day clock began ticking on December 19th. So send your letter today, speak up for equality, and FIGHT BACK against the right-wingers. And spread the word to friends and family, and tell them to do the same ASAP.
