37. Thank you, TO. It seems so simple to me...

...but I find myself defending an age-old, tried and true method of nonviolent and effective action as if the idea had just been invented yesterday. I understand all the reasons (even the made-up ones) the bigots have for being up in arms about it, but I can't begin to fathom anyone on the right side of the issue failing to get it, or support it.

The discussion about eightmaps.com had me shaking my head: There's been no violence, no "attacks" on anti-gays at their homes because of it. Plenty of stories and baseless fearmongering from the bigots, but that's all.

Something I would have discovered on my own eventually, but which I learned instantly from eightmaps.com, was that our kitty-corner neighbors had donated $200 to Prop H8. I was flabberghasted; I've known these people (casually, not intimately) since I was a child; I went to school with their kids; I dog-sat for them and watered their garden when I was a teenager.

As angry and hurt as I was to learn what they really think of me, I haven't been compelled to blow up their mailbox or paint nasty things on their sidewalk. All that's happened is that I've learned which of my neighbors I can trust -- and which I can't. (They don't have a business I can boycott -- they're retired -- but do you think I'd ask them to watch our house when we go on vacation now?)

Another story: In 2008, I wrote a long blog post about a guy running for city council in a nearby town -- a Knights of Columbus officer who not only donated to PH8, but staged a one-man protest at city hall the first day marriage licenses were issued (his homemade sign called our marriages "fairy tales").

A short time after my blog post went up, I got a phone call out of the blue -- Mr. Anti-Gay had gone to the trouble of tracking down my home phone number, and called to rant at me about "libel" and "slander." Although caught off-guard, I just kept asking him if anything I had written was factually inaccurate. That pissed him off even more; he knew that while I tore him apart, ruthlessly, nothing I had written was untrue.

Anyway, near the end of the call, he started asking me, repeatedly, if I was going to come to his house in the middle of the night and "write something" on his front door. Wha...? I told him he sounded like he was projecting his own fantasies onto me, and that I was the one who should be afraid of him coming to my house and doing god-knows-what. (Frankly, I was afraid of just that. Such a thing would never have occurred to me -- until he put the thought in my head. I prowled the perimeter of our property nightly for a while after that call, and jumped at every odd sound.)

Where do people like this come from? What makes them think this way? Again, I guess it's all projection.

I just don't understand how the empty exposure = violence idea could occur to anyone supposedly on the Left -- unless such a person is inclined to violence him/herself, or isn't actually on the right side of the issue, and has something to hide (like a donation).

(As for what happened with Mr. Anti-Gay: I refused to remove my blog post -- until I got another call, from his opponent, the incumbent, who had a very good reason for asking me, nicely, to take down the post: she was doing her part to uphold a pledge all the candidates were supposed to stick to regarding fair play. So, because of her reasoning, taking down the post became the right thing to do in my mind. In the end, she retained her city council seat -- by a landslide -- and Mr. Anti-Gay ended up with something like 13% of the vote. I doubt I had much to to do with that -- Mr. Anti-Gay was already well-known in these parts as an extreme wingnut -- but the outcome was quite satisfying.)
